NYSE invited Verizon CEO Hans Vestberg to ring the opening bell

The NYSE welcomes Verizon to celebrate its 25th anniversary of founding

NYSE TV by Staff Writer, June 30, 2025
Verizon CEO Hans Vestberg was joined by Verizon team members on Monday to ring the opening bell at the New York Stock Exchange, celebrating the company’s founding. Verizon was formed 25 years ago through the merger of two NYSE-listed companies: Bell Atlantic and GTE.
The carrier formed on June 30, 2000, and began trading on the NYSE on July 3 of that year. Verizon was the first in the world to offer 5G and 5G mobile edge compute, and now offers the solutions to enterprises, governments and other firms around the world.

@OP

Let’s clarify a key point in the article:
Verizon was not the first in the world to launch 5G or 5G mobile edge compute.

It was among the earliest in the U.S., launching limited 5G Home service in 2018 and mobile 5G in April 2019. However, South Korean carriers (SK Telecom, KT, LG U+) launched nationwide 5G mobile service days earlier, and China Mobile began massive deployment soon after.

On edge computing, Verizon did partner early with AWS Wavelength to bring mobile edge compute to its network—but similar efforts were underway globally by players like NTT DoCoMo and Deutsche Telekom.

Verizon was a leader, not the first. Important distinction. Let’s keep the record straight—especially on a platform that employees and industry insiders rely on for facts, not PR.

The first in the world to offer 5G is such bs, but if you are going to lie, make it a big one.
