Thread regarding Teradata Corp. layoffs

Look at it this way

From an APJ perspective, these layoffs, while difficult, were long overdue. For years, the company carried excessive overhead in the US and Europe: overstaffed legacy teams, prolonged decision-making processes, and limited focus on high-impact delivery.
The reductions have created a leaner organization. APJ teams are now stepping up significantly, delivering intelligent, efficient work on cloud and AI initiatives at a much faster pace while headquarters adapts to the new structure.
For those affected by the layoffs: if performance or adaptation lagged, the cuts were inevitable in a competitive market. Rather than endless complaints in forums, the focus should shift to skill development or new opportunities.
The company is now more agile and better positioned for growth in 2026. APJ continues to drive strong execution. It is time to contribute meaningfully or move on.

@OP aka super engineer, nothing says “strategic clarity” like calling entire regions “overhead” after they built the business. If agility simply means reducing cost centers and redistributing pressure, then yes — incredibly agile. It’s fascinating how structural decisions at the top become “adaptation gaps” at the bottom, and geographic cost arbitrage is reframed as performance evolution. Rooting for this bold experiment where cost optimization is rebranded as innovation. If this is what agility looks like, 2026 should be… fascinating.

@d4 well, my bad. I thought the irony was obvious on this board. But I understand : with super-engineer always spitting his nonsense, how could you have known I was sarcastic ?

@cr Keep in mind…these market leaders are innovating much faster than Teradata and have billions to put toward R&D. They aren’t sitting still and certainly aren’t worried about Teradata.

The problem isnt that we are going "lean", the problem is we are only going lean in terms of people. We are not simultaniously going lean in terms of processes and procedures. I have more meetings on my calendar for reviews, and approvals, and updates than for anything proactive. So people are having to take on more work, without trying to cut down on the "stuff" that comes along with it. And since everyone is taking on more, they have less time for everything, so the reviews, approvals and updates take longer from everyone, and things just grind to a halt, all while being yelled at by leadership that we need to be faster and more agile. Even the best performers (if we assume only the low performers are being let go) are going to burn out and their performance will suffer, or they'll just leave to go somewhere else.

Sad and short sighted, CFO will take money and run. Board will cover this up.

@at Well that is a reasoned response and very accurate in my experience.

The reality is that, of the teams I know that took hits, each hit was performed on a cost basis. For one team, they lost their highest-paid people in each of the last 4 RIFs. Dwindling to the least paid. The remaining were also the least productive in their teams.

The managers I know who were affected, at least 1 or 2 of whom carried the weight of their teams.

As a manager, I was not given the opportunity for input on the past RIFs, I was told who was being cut, and each one was also the highest compensated. Each of them ran circles around the entire team.

Super-engineer, the AI expert, doesn’t understand that AI apps can analyze posts and tell if they are written by the same person.
