More Layoff News from Seattle

Starbucks laid off today (not relocated to Nashville) 61 tech jobs in their Tech Support Center. AI continues to claim the tech industry in the greater Seattle area. Even less places for the laid off Seattle Tech Support folks to go.

@1gt This is nothing new unfortunately and has been going on for a very long time. It’s just much more magnified now. The wealth gap is huge and the middle class can only support so much pressure to hold our economy together.

I wish I didn't feel this way: it feels like employers are getting more powerful; the wealth gap keeps getting bigger; and AI is only going to accelerate both. What to do?

@1dt

The West Coast wasn’t always so tech savvy. That is a result of all the Internet start up in the 90s. No reason that it can’t shift somewhere else. Someone else mentioned the crazy mayors and governors, raising taxes and driving people away. That is absolutely a huge part of it and if the right city in the right state is friendly enough towards citizens no reason people won’t pack up and move.

@1dt People like Karen Bass, Katie Wilson, Gavin Newsome, Daniel Lurie, and Keith Wilson are driving them away with high taxes.

@1d, you may of hit it: "just starting out"; younger workers are cheaper. As far as cost of living and stable weather: no, nope, I don't think so. And there is no where in the world more tech savvy than US west coast.

@cv Cost of living in Nashville is pretty attractive compared to other parts of the country. Weather is mostly predictable and natural disasters non existent. I think companies will find people willing to move there especially if they are just starting out in their careers.

"The layoff will result in the relocation or contracting out of certain of the employer’s operations or the partners’ positions." Or in other words 252 folks took a package rather than move to Nashville.

Nashville is two time zones closer to Hyderabad which is the final destination for all American tech jobs.

Nashville is a drunken, uneducated Vegas - good luck building a workforce there. Race to the bottom anyone?
