Thread regarding ExxonMobil Corp. layoffs

4th July 🇺🇸

If I bet my life on anything, it’s American Exceptionalism rooted in integrity, excellence, and courage.
Working alongside our global teams has only reinforced it: no other country comes close.

Yet stepping back, it’s clear how offshoring and outsourcing to low-cost, low-capability paired with unchecked onshore importing,
has frayed the very fabric of this nation.

These are people who haven’t invented or dominated in any meaningful field beyond cheap IT services.
What the he-l are we doing?
These jobs belong to American workers.
Have we done nearly enough to build the skills of those in weaker economic corners? There are proven ways to give back: rigorous education, hands-on training, community engagement . Lift them into the middle class and show them how capitalism actually works: through merit, productivity, and upward mobility.
Instead, too many short-sighted, narcissistic managers chase RSU windfalls by flooding teams with cheap bodies, piling up technical debt and hollowing out our edge.
Enough. Everyone must do their part, whatever it takes. No excuses. . It’s now or never.

@OP I hear you, but what can we do? It feels like living in a workplace jail where everyone is locked into their “cell,” terrified of speaking up, and quick to shove someone else toward the execution bed, a.k.a. the PIP. The moment you raise a concern, you’re labeled persona non grata. If you refuse to clean up or correct BTC's sh-t, suddenly you’re “not doing your job,” and they start lining up replacements from an endless pool of desperate job‑hunters. Honestly, I don’t know if individual contributors have any real power left in this system.

100% agree. Dont let the "experts" tell you what America is all about. We decide that. And too much immigrantion is just a giant pain.

@c3 I'll never understand how their broken English gets them promoted into these positions.

It must be the things they add in emails like "Kindly" and that they just "do the needful". Is that what it is?

I really think they just hoodwink the C-suite somehow with some sort of weird charm. Other than being inexpensive.

The system keeps fast‑tracking Indians "studied" in US to management jobs. look closely all the new ones joining in Houston talk about being executives from day one and its not them daydreaming it is happening . In my previous assignment, a newly promoted Indian manager immediately started hiring offshore and restructuring the team. We had six people total: four in the U.S. and two in India. For our group meeting, he proposed a 7 a.m. start time to make things “convenient” for the offshore hires. I spoke up because it was clearly unreasonable for the U.S. team, and no one else said anything. Instead of having a professional conversation, he showed me who is the boss in ranking.

This is America, warts and all. You just refused to recognize it. The sooner you accept this reality the sooner you will find peace of mind. Stop blaming everyone else and look in the mirror.

@b6 - Good for you and that is one way to push back. There is a younger US employee that could be trained for your job, and at least try to keep it in the US. When the older generation retires and they are being replaced by offshored people that is just wrong. Even the younger eomployees should see they are being passed over for offshored people. If people don't push back then it will all cave in around them. USA!!

@b4 I tried to pick my replacement, only to be told that my eventual replacement would not be in the U.S., but in India. I am now refusing to train anyone.

OP - Times have changed for the worse for sure. The American worker is being shorted, and it seems no one with the means to do something cares, or is paying attention. I wrote Senator Cornyn and only got back a canned letter from his office. The politicians do not care as long as they get their donations so they can keep running their grift. At least Senator Cornyn was voted out, but someone no better than him is running in his place. I am a boomer (68), and it is not me I am worried about. It is our children and grandchildren that are going to get hit the hardest. I also think it is us older workers that need to be the voice for the younger generations for them to have the same opportunities we have had. We need to vote career politicians out and vote in younger ones that can make policies that help the next generations. One thing I did was retire and open my job up to a younger worker. If you are over 60 and have the means maybe think about retiring as well. Back in the day 65 was the age most retired if not younger, but 65 was when most exited the workforce if they had the means. I was able to pick my replacement and train them for a few years, and then retired. So, we need to get rid of career polticians, and also retire at an earlier age. That goes for the rank and file along with the executives.

These are some of the key reasons why I am leaving EM. I will not sell out my long built experience and skills to train “resources” who will fill jobs meant for my neighbors, children, and grandchildren. Let them fail, let EM fail for destroying American jobs and culture.

It started with manufacturing and now thanks to the internet……..has spread to the white collar jobs.

For the life of me I couldn’t understand why people were so eager to work from home.

However I think this will be short lived because I can already see the cracks in the foundation. XOM will try to make it work but in the end I believe the engineering jobs will return back to our shores…..that is unless they are all replaced with AI.

I’m a short timer so best of luck to all. May the odds be in your favor.

Don't expect any help from the current Congress and administration. They are only interested in lining their pockets.
