Thread regarding 3M layoffs

Go Bill

I’ll probably be in the minority, but I think Bill Brown is exactly the leader 3M needed.

He came in with a plan, had the courage to make the tough decisions, and is executing it without wavering. That isn’t easy, and it certainly isn’t popular.

Yes, the layoffs are painful, and my heart goes out to everyone affected. But leadership isn’t about avoiding difficult decisions—it’s about making them when the long-term future of the company is at stake.

Bill was hired to transform 3M, not to preserve the status quo. From what I’ve seen, he’s earning every cent by making the hard calls that many before him avoided.

History will judge whether he got everything right, but no one can say he lacks courage or conviction.

I'm seriously concerned about you people who think this is a serious post. You might be the reason Tide has a warning label to not eat their pods.

The massive toll in talent loss and morale would be justified if the stock was up but it’s not. It’s underperforming compared to its peers and to the overall market. The beatings will continue until morale improves and eventually the company will breakup.

@ak yeah, a short-term share buyback strategy will do that.

It gooses the share price and makes execs happy because their stock options are worth more, but it just wastes money on something that don't help the company or the employees, and ties up cash for an uncomfortable length of time, because selling those shares causes the stock price to fall.

What the f*** are you talking about?
A GOOD company is one that invests in the best employees to lead and manage the work. It encourages its people to GROW, and in return, those employees bring innovative ideas that help improve processes and strengthen the work within their departments.

By contrast, third-party companies such as Cognizant/Genpact often only do the work they are asked to do, and the quality is POOR. They do not document properly, and valuable knowledge is lost because of employee turnover. There seems to be little sense of ownership, since they only do the minimum required.

I have seen many 3M employees who, out of pride in working here, gave their best every day, and the company used to also rewarded that commitment. Unfortunately, much of that has been lost because of the decisions Bill has made, and as a result, this company is becoming a mediocre place to work.

OP are you high? He has transformed nothing. He's extracting value for executives and shareholders in preparation for the complete dismantling of the company.

As a strong leader ….. can he build without laying off people? Died the strong leader have new ideas? It is easy to lay off and fix , anybody heartless will do it. Why does he need such a big CRL R&D?

Your post reads like it was AI-assisted. It’s full of generic leadership clichés (“tough decisions,” “long-term future,” “status quo,” “history will judge”), offers no 3M-specific evidence, and follows the classic AI formula: acknowledge the pain, pivot with “but,” then end with an inspirational conclusion. It sounds polished, but it doesn’t actually make the case. It’s just classic trolling.

Good on you, I guess, for needing attention and going out and doing something about it.

I suppose, if by "transform" you mean "break up". But he isn't bringing back the 3M that was an innovation engine and a great place to have a career.

Bill is a strong leader. You can see wall street reacting with recovering share price from the previous CEO.

Go Billy Go.
