Thread regarding 3M layoffs

So, let me take a wild guess

Most of the laid off folks are coincidentally in the above 50 age bracket, right? People who earned higher pay through knowledge and experience and are now paying for it with their jobs? Am I wrong?

What is the median age of people who are laid off? An average can be skewed by outliers, so it seems like the median would be a more meaningful statistic. Just curious.

In my group laid off a few months, the average age of those laid off was 48 vs. 42 for those keeping their jobs.

In my layoff group, they had 1 person under 40 in order to make it look like it wasn’t age discrimination.

@a7 the rigged the layoffs so the average comes in just under 40 - but when you look at the list there is ALOT of people in the 45 -55 age ranges so clearly they are targeting the old timers

Yep - as soon as I hit 55 I was suddenly no longer necessary after 25 years and 5 promotions over that time. Having Pension plan 1 didn’t help either.

I work for a large plant and i am hoping to receive the severance package when I hit 55 end of the year. Time to leave this place after 30 years.

We’ve all been thru the unspoken discrimination that starts at age 40 and the target on our backs especially if under age 55 which happens to be when Pension Plan 1 vests in a big way. The silly consultants could not care less about expertise but they know what will save money short term, definition being the end of their noses.

They need to have a range of ages to avoid getting sued for age discrimination, so there will be both young and old in every round of layoffs.

That said, they absolutely are targeting Portfolio 1 employees for the older ones getting the boot.

I was told they balance the average age just below 40.
