Thread regarding Verizon Communications Inc. layoffs

A plea to the board on X

I know how we see this mess. Now I know how others see it. Pretty much the same.

"Verizon was once a pillar of American innovation. Today it reflects strategic drift and a failure to lead.

With no clear path to growth or meaningful differentiation, CEO Dan Schulman appears to be reverting to the oldest and weakest playbook: cutting skilled American workers to prop up short term stock bump.

This tactic ignores a fundamental truth. A company cannot hollow out its own institutional knowledge without consequence. The talent being discarded is the very foundation that made Verizon great.

What we are seeing resembles railway operator’s “last car” fallacy. Remove the weakest link for a smoother ride, but there is always another last car. Eventually, nothing of value remains.

This is not leadership. It is managed decline.

The board must recognize the trajectory and act before an iconic American company is diminished beyond repair."

So, enlighten me ... how are you going to plea with the board ?

Not sure if we can rely on how things use to be tbh and the impacts of layoffs as impacting the productivity as it would have in the past. AI integration to replace people will have an impact.

Give me a break. Wireline was forced to lean out years ago. Wireless, meanwhile, had become a bloated, complacent cash cow. Now that the mobile market is saturated, it has no choice but to become leaner and more disciplined as well.

One of the worst decisions this company ever made was halting the fiber build and redirecting that capital toward Lowell’s 5G vanity project. That was the point when I accepted the buyout, the strategic direction was clearly misguided, everyone could see it.

It is also predictable that those who are cut will insist the company is losing all of its talent. The reality is that plenty of talented people remain. I am still in touch with many of them, and that talent will continue to be there as Dan works to right the ship.

Don’t forget. The Bell System promoted experienced techs. Then Bell Atlantic merged with Nynex and welllll we need to take away a few perks yet still got sacrificial lambs to take management. Then the infamous birth of Verizon happened and more perks and benefits were taken to the point where no experienced tech in their right mind would take it. So Verizon resorted to Help Wanted ads. And here we are today. Brace for impact.
