Thread regarding Oracle Corp. layoffs

What's the better option?

If I wait to be laid off, I'll get severance and unemployment (allowed in my state), but I'll be competing with everyone else who got cut for very few available jobs. If I quit, I get nothing but I can have a new job ready before I leave so there is no uncertainty. Neither option is ideal. I'm sure others have been mulling this over as well, I'm curious what you've decided to do.

Play 'Jump from Van Halen' and do it.....don't sell yourself short, ask for 20% over your current salary....if you have talent, find something new and exciting that you will enjoy.

Not sure what you mean, "burn through it in no time". I was laid off in Sept, I took 8k and funded my IRA for the year, and I still have a months worth of cash left even now. So add back that 8k and technically I could have made the severance last almost 14 months.

Now, I have not had health care or a family to pay for, so I guess everyone's situation can vary.

@OP

  1. Locate the giant red button that says 'EJECT'
  2. Push it. Stat.

@aj what sort of "ties"? Like prove you are looking for a job? It seems odd to me to leave money on the table.

It is easier to find a job while you still have one, it just is. There are negative connotations to prospective employers about a candidate who was laid off, there just are. If you are over 45 add in ageism in the job search, it is real.

As @aj implied, unemployment benefits aren't a bridge to cover you until your next job. Oracle severance is poor at best. You will burn through it in no time especially when you include what your healthcare costs will be. Last time Oracle provided a month of cobra.

Find a job, leave and don't look back. Trying to time getting severance and getting a new job so you can get some big payout is gambling in today's job market. You will likely lose money not get some windfall.

Unemployment was so paltry and comes with ties so I passed on it altogether as it really wasn’t worth it.
