Thread regarding Medtronic Inc. layoffs

MN RTO bemoaners: If you don't want to go to the office, quit.

Sick of all the complaining about RTO as though it's somehow outrageous for a company to ask employees to work the way they were originally hired to work.

Companies are generally entitled to make reasonable changes to how work is performed. They can reasonably change your responsibilities, raise performance expectations, require compliance with workplace policies, and require employees to work from the office if that's what they believe is best for the business.

You don't have to agree with that philosophy, and it's perfectly reasonable to prefer remote work. But framing every RTO decision as the product of greedy executives or some malicious agenda ignores the fact that businesses make these decisions for a variety of reasons. Most companies would rather adopt policies that are popular with employees. When they see that a particular arrangement isn't delivering the results they expected -or isn't worth the cost- they change course.

In MN's case, employees are relatively expensive compared with many other locations. One of the main reasons those roles were based in MN was proximity to the company's headquarters and leadership. If employees are rarely in the office, that advantage is essentially gone. At that point, it's fair to ask why the company should continue paying MN labor costs instead of hiring elsewhere.

You may disagree with the decision, but it's not irrational. It's a business judgment about cost, collaboration, and the purpose of maintaining a headquarters workforce.

If in-office work is a condition of employment, your choices are to accept it, negotiate, or find another job. You'll be happier than complaining on here constantly.

That's not cruelty-it's how employment works.

The remote workers will be replaced by AI soon enough. They better learn how to turn a wrench if they knew what is good for them.

As if nothing has changed about workplace technology in the past 10 years!

“The way they were originally hired to work” - they were originally hired and recruited as remote buddy

@dp Our colleagues in India do work in office. They have a weird flex schedule where they work in office 5 days then 3 days the next week.
They do not have cubes, their space is a seat at a long table with colleagues on both sides. I am not advocating off-shoring jobs, but everyone should check facts before speaking.

@dp True, but what is the out come when you out source to a lower trust, lower IQ, lower skill environment? Hmm, maybe lower quality, lower volume and worse culture even why in the short term earnings appear better.

I've been saying all along that if your job can be done from home, it can be done from a home in India. Looks like ExCom agrees.

Bingo. Medtronic is trying to get more people to quit. They need the headcount and free up cash to hire people in India. This just proves that remote work works.

@OP Certainly a complex topic but I admit, you are correct. It’s the MDT show, they get to decide what band is playing. If not for this new RTO is targeting employees who have been designated as remote, I would completely get in the train with you. Also, it’s subjective - they rescind someone’s remote status if they are unlucky enough to live within 26 miles of the office.
Lastly, I am still trying to understand what is so beneficial about being in the office. Have OHS scores gone up? No. Are projects meeting deadlines earlier? No.
This is nothing more than a RIF without severance. They will see how many employees will leave then finalize the next RIF numbers.

I'm wondering which teams are being impacted by this new mandate? Is it MN folks who were former 5 day a week employees who just fail to show up 4 days a week. I know many grandfathered/new hired Remote folks who are not aware of this new requirement.

Classic bait and switch

I was hired as remote employee. My recruiter and hiring manager told me the compensation will be less as it is a remote position. If Medtronic asks me to come into office, will Medtronic renegotiate my salary?

What’s the RTO mandate? Is it 4 days/week or 5? 8 hour days?

I don’t work at MDT any longer, retired. If you were an in office employee prior to COVID I agree, you should be going in. But the RTO now is employees that were hired to be a remote worker. Might have been the deciding factor they took that job. I’m not sure I think MDT should back out of their original agreement

No, bootlicker, I'm not a simpleton and I'll take a different choice. Ever hear about active disengagement?

That's me, and the fact it twists your pa-ties so hard is the icing on the cake!

Have a blessed day.

I’ve bonded with people in the office over how d-mb and meaningless it is to be in the office, OP. If all of us who would prefer working from home quit it would leave just a handful of weirdos and the c-suite still driving in through the smoggy air everyday.

"Sick of all the complaining about RTO as though it's somehow outrageous for a company to ask employees to work the way they were originally hired to work."

This is no longer the case. MDT is forcing people hired on and labeled as remote workers into the office.

I agree that companies have the right to require employees to be in the office, but then it should be ALL employees — no exceptions for people who happen to live 26 miles or more away from an office.
