Thread regarding Medtronic Inc. layoffs

Raise didn't keep me safe

Just a warning to people who might think, like I did, that getting a raise means they're planning to keep you around. That's not true. Four months after I got a raise, I was gone. I think it hit me even harder because I was so convinced I was safe. I just wanted to share this so people know where they really stand.

Principal level might be easily targeted if your pay is higher in the band. RIFed was hard but also opportunity. So just be prepared when still have a job. Best wishes. From a former Medtronic employee

@cv been here a little over a decade and promoted four times. Slow and steady has worked just fine for me. Sorry if your manager is toxic.

@be Lol. That's not how it works. It's up or out. If you're not aiming for a 4 or aiming for promotion and playing the carrot on the stick game, you'll be managed out.

Now that I’m over six figures and have a great work life balance, I’m not sure I want to climb any higher I’ll do my job well, but I don’t want to aim for 4s and set a new bar for my annual review. Not sure a promotion would bring anything but trouble.

Can confirm @b3's perspective.

I see many times people fight to get promoted to principal role only to find the salary increase is minimum while expectations jump to impossible level. By year end they get worse ratings then they were ending up with less MIP.
Some smart ones use the principal title as leverage to be hired as better role outside Medtronic

My experience with raises/promotions is that they do nothing but increase your visibility for being criticized. Your base expectations grow. If you don't completely satisfy everyone around you the target is going to be bigger on you than it was before your promotion.

Yeah, larger raise means more cost savings and a bigger target.
