Thread regarding ExxonMobil Corp. layoffs

2023 PDS Season Mega Thread

Post the latest on your PDS prep discussions here.

Had my draft pds discussion yesterday. After maybe 5 minutes in, my new manager said… “look, likely going to be ranked good or NI. Everyone else are high performers and it’s relative.”
Meanwhile, I actually trained 1/3 of this team within the last 16 months due to all the attrition we’ve had.

Your fates are already decided folks :(

Rank session feedback today. I wanted to rank you higher but the CL 29+ won the arguments for their chosen ones.

Thoughts on being shipped off to LCS?

It’s impossible to even understand that now, but for the first 20 years of my career at Exxon and then ExxonMobil, I never had to think about what I put in the PDS - it was just a quick laundry list of the things I worked on, no need for bragging or “strategies”. And it worked just fine, I retired last year at CL29 (strictly hands-on technical individual contributor, no “Advisor”, “Principal” or other BS like that).
My last year (2022) we were told we’re going to be ranked not by quality or quantity of our work, but by its “impact”, which, of course, is defined by the role you’ve been assigned! If I would have had to do my PDS, I simply would have not known how to handle it, because it doesn’t make any sense. The ranking system was always a sore, but now it’s a corrupt caricature.

We are going to reduce headcount in Houston by 15 to 20% in 2023 while staffing up lower cost regions of the world.

If you are in Houston, your fate has already been determined before you submitted your PDS.

Did my PDS in the bathroom in five minutes a few days ago while testing the quality and smoothness of the new toilet paper. I guess the sensation was captured in my PDS accurately. And what I think about DW too.

Was told during my last PDS in May 2021 that I was great, strong role model for the organization - leading the charge on so many initiatives, all good feedback further pointing to my strengths.

Yada, yada, yada.

NSI in July.

PIL in August.

Whomever said your fate is decided / sealed is 100% correct. Especially as you get older, it doesn’t matter how hard you work or what you do, your age is a like a bag of rocks tied to your foot in a deep and fast moving stream!

Just think of the time and money saved if people just reused the same form each year??? That used to take me HOURS to compile. Such a huge waste of energy!

The company wants employees that are cheap.

I was told by my manager that I am twenty steps ahead of everyone else during my PDS review but did not have the soft skills necessary to wait on those that were not to catch up to me.

What does our company want? Employees that are thinking twenty steps ahead of others or do they want employees that row in the boat with those that are twenty steps behind?

Just copy and paste last year's PDS for 2023. Your fate has already been determined.

There was a long-term 30+ career employee in the United States that used the same PDS for a decade before he/she retired. No manager ever realized that he/she was using last year's PDS for a decade until he/she told everyone at their retirement party.

Translation, management does not really read your PDS. You are required to have one, but it does not determine your fate.

Send your recordings to WikiLeaks to transpose to text. It will make great reading on the internet.

Been recording conversations for years, mostly with managers, but also with backstabbers. Can't be used in court, but will be provided to HR and those who were recorded to make people sweat a little bit. That's enough for me!

I just recorded the conversation with my boss. Now I can replay it right in her face if she changes her tune after ranking session. That will be her parting gift from me to her. Will share it with news media as well if and when I leave the company.

Behavior.

Great, that is the only thing that matters, you don't need to be knowledgeable and practical in applying excellent technical knowledge, you just need to be super good at behaviors....

Just went over my pds this morning and my feedback was that I did well but my manager has pressure to nitpick improvement items. Said I do great work but from a behavioral standpoint I could improve and it will hit me negatively during ranking sessions.

OP you made the worst possible mistake you could make in the current environment. You trained your replacements!! UNDER NO CIRCUSNTANCE YOU TRAIN YOUNG PEOPLE!!!! Once they know what you know you are disposable. Good luck.

Last year, I was asked to submit more names of KO than needed. Too many on my team left the company and my manager didn’t like my list. After the third iteration request for new names, I suspected that my manager was cherry picking to justify the NI. I happened to be 55 at the time.

I know I'll be bottom ranked already. I'm 50 and there's definitely nobody in my office that could possibly be ranked lower than me. Inspired.

And you would never know what exchanges and sacrifices are made in the actual rank sessions.

It may not be bad to discreetly record your conversations. ;)
