Listening to the news around the SAG-AFTRA demands and things like the company that replaced it's customer service with AI chatbots (Dukaan) has me thinking about the pending encroachment of AI.
I think it is reasonable to think that most of our jobs are or will be replaceable by AI within 5 years. This includes everything from our customer service people to our exalted developers, DBAs, and architects.
And you know, the charlie crew will kick every one of us to the curb for an extra 5 cents on the bottom line.
Some of you reading this are saying "oh that won't happen to me, I'm too good/too important/too hard a worker/my job is too complex...Honestly if you think you are safe, you haven't been paying attention.
So what do we do?
Hope?
Work harder?
Go someplace else?
None of these are real solutions.
Is a union the solution? I don't know. I live in a right to work state the unions here are effectively toothless. But I think something needs to be done. We are watching ourselves be overtaken by forced obsolescence. Even if we unionize now it may already be too late.
you say "unions are corrupt" - sure sometimes they are, but sometimes they are good people working with our best interest at heart.
you say "unions are socialist/communist/etc" - We can see the end of our careers mapped out by capitalism and we're not willing to to protect ourselves due to ideology?
you say "I don't want to float people who don't work as hard as I do"- you are happy to float charlie and the board who don't work as hard as you do. How about floating the folks around you instead?
you say "I don't want to spend my money on union dues" - well, if we got appropriate raises every so often, that might not hurt so much.
Look, I don't know if this is the solution or if there even is a solution, but to quote the Simpsons, "We've tried nothing and it isn't working"
