Thread regarding Ford layoffs

For those that don't think Ford CAN force remote workers back into the office, read this!

https://fortune.com/2023/08/23/lyft-return-to-office-ceo-david-risher/

All the arguments used here against RTO are also in the Lyft story. Allowing workers to live anywhere. Cutting office space in half.

Don't think this is about JF, DF, and BF to do too!

Here's another thing. Ford still has a COVID vaccine mandate for their new employees.

About 25% of the population (higher for those with PhDs) refuse to get it.

Good luck finding people, FoMoCo!

"The one and only thing that prods employers to treat their employees decently is their need for them."

Earning a bad reputation can make it very difficult for an employer to attract top-notch or even mediocre talent.

Ford has done an exceptional job at that.

The one and only thing that prods employers to treat their employees decently is their need for them. Other than some sort of government mandate or law, of course, but let's not go there.

If you go back in history in the U.S., employers treated their employees horribly, just like anywhere else. For instance, look up the working conditions for the actors and technicians that worked on The Wizard of Oz back in the 1930s. Read about the working conditions for the men who build the Empire State Building, the Hoover Dam and the Golden Gate Bridge.

Just like the companies have to compete with the best product for the lowest price to win our business, they also have to pay the best wage and provide the best working conditions for the prevailing labor market. And right now, that market SU-KS!

This is the way.

Companies do have every right to force RTO. It su-ks, but it is what it is.

Companies can do whatever they want. Employees can choose who they want to work for, or not work for.

GM can say oh look we have a seniority mix problem in AZ (our older IT workers relocated from MI to AZ) so let’s close the AZ data center, oh and cut those workers.

Ford can relocate 85% of its salaried jobs to low cost countries.
Ford can cut all its senior technical salaried workers.

@1khk+1ogZPh9Z Feel free to go into the office then. WHQ, PDC, etc are all open and have plenty desks for you to sit at.

Dearborn may be having issues but my local downtown is doing great. People have more money to spend and they're spending it close to home instead of close to work.

Let me try typing that last line again….

What matters is who can pay the politicians the most.

In capitalism, everyone wins.

In crony capitalism, the rich and powerful win.

The push for return to office benefits the bankers. It’s bigger than Ford. Bankers and commercial real estate investors want it. Having information workers working remotely is a huge cost savings to companies. It doesn’t really matter what the workers want. What matters is who can we all he politicians the most.

@1khk+1ogZPh9Z your comment translates to.
I don't care about taking back my life and time as long as businesses can profit off of me.

All it means really is we need a paradigm shift and that money moving is just moving elsewhere.

Why you'd prefer to save a system that feeds on you wasting time and your life for commutes rather than spend that time on yourself or family is beyond me.

You're still getting taxed by your state.
Your just not getting taxed as much anymore.

It's a win for you and in capitalism when someone wins someone loses.
but you'd rather lose.

If you can work from home why wouldn't you? so much time, money and gas is saved.

Return to the office, for Ford, Meta, Lyft and whoever else, has nothing to do with collaboration, productivity or control. It’s about the economy!! Commercial real estate is crashing, residential property is high, downtowns are dying (along with the small businesses), plane tickets are high.

I love working from home but I’ll go back into the office for the sake of the economy.

Anyone see the irony though that Ford (and all these other companies) are still contracting with consulting companies for individual performers to entire DEV teams making applications and those employees still work remote all day long?

This isn’t about work or any other bullsh-t like company culture or team building….it’s all about control.

What happens when the hourly people aren’t working the line 40 hours per week, or more? Less need for salary employees.

@umt - If they forced me back into the office, my 50+ hour work weeks would quickly become exactly 40 hours. Treat me like a child and I’ll act like one.

Ford should definitely force people to come back into the office five days a week.

And if they want to, the CAN do it.

Ford cannot force the employees to RTO. Yes, the company can push for it and make it mandatory, even conditional with employment. However, it is up to the employees if they go back or not.

Since I do want to leave this company, I already told my manager that I am not coming back to the office. So my manager has 2 options now:

  1. - Let me go, which allows for 20 weeks of unemployment (better than nothing).
  2. - Deal with my temporary physical absence until it is permanent when I find a better job elsewhere.

Since most of us are going to be laid off anyway, with the company losing money and the chances of keeping a NA job are very small... why would I want to spend money/time/gas going into the office? I already have a big rainy fund and I am not afraid to lose my job.

I am tired of seeing people let go, while their technical responsibilities keep piling on me, with no salary raise. Maybe not having this job will be the best I can have now, since I'll actually have some time to upgrade my skills and look for something better.

"Wanting" people to return to the office and actually getting them to are two different things. A bunch of companies have tried to force employees to come into the office and employees ignored it. Can't fire everyone.

Ford is ki-ling West Dearborn business

Work from home and now major cuts and resourcing to LLC. I am sure the city is wanting people to return to the office to drive up business. But yet Billy buys a train station in the money pit called Detroit. Just stupid. The upper management at Ford are sociopaths. I see the Ford management id--ts at the dream cruise and they are total Mo--ns.
