Thread regarding AT&T layoffs

Well this is just grand - Received Lay off notice 4 weeks after telling management we'll move

In late September, I was officially asked if I would move to Dallas from St. Louis. My family and I discussed it, and we signed that we would carry it in early October. No relocation package was promised, but L4 said there would be something to "Help" in the move. Welp got my letter and a subsequent phone call from L3, and HR explaining my position is being eliminated on November 6th.

We are lucky that we hadn't listed our home or undertaken any expense related to moving, but what the actual F***... why ask me to move when the position would be gone less than a month later? AT&T is destroying itself, and maybe that is the goal.

Anytime Management asks vital questions like that, it a “Show of Interest” not an actual offer. Management biggest fear is too many volunteers.

I had a coworker who moved to Dallas in hopes of saving his job only to be surplused within a year. His wife sacrificed her good paying job, and he also had to move an invalid mother to Dallas to boot. Think long and hard before doing a relo in hopes of hanging onto an AT&T job.

It’s pretty common knowledge the company does layoffs within a year of a move with no shame.

You're not supposed to accept the relocation. You're supposed to voluntarily quit so we don't pay you severance.

to @ndm+1phAOtbL: You're an id--t. The post: "LOL and you fell for it. You're lucky the timing wasn't to notify you after your move" is absolutely correct and the hard truth of what happened. Why would anyone with half a brain move to accept a brain knowing layoffs are going on everywhere and they have no guarantee of a job????

“AT&T mobility any better than Verizon or TMobile??? if not - you can be sure T will need to compete on price and that means more cost reduction....ditto for Fiber...”

The most realistic and truthful post on this board.

Jeffy McElfresh has really fallen out of favor with all employees! Looking back, it's hard to believe he once stood to inherit the CEO position.

You couldn’t move anyway with bidenflation. Purchasing a home with high interest rates is too expensive.

That's really just cruel, hurtful, and deceiving. Many have thought RELO was just a ruse anyway. They should just be honest and straightforward. In my Sir+ wave in early 2019, I thought that lame excuse of being in a "collaboration zone" city/location was BS. I had been a full-time telecommuter for years at that point and never had any issues with my work or availability. You definitely dodged a bullet there without incurring the cost of moving. Best of luck!

Some of the posters on here don't realize that the notification and relocation timelines for their org may not apply to other orgs. Every org has their own notification and relocation timelines. It would help to post what org you are in when commenting on timelines.

But at least you found out now before you jumped into the EXPENSIVE housing market AND OUTRAGEOUS interest rates that we now have thanks to inflation.

Why would anyone incur the cost and aggravation to move to Dallas for a company that has lost its soul? Randall, Stankey and many of the top leaders have destroyed the company....it has been reduced to 2 commodity businesses - Fiber and mobility....think about it....is AT&T mobility any better than Verizon or TMobile??? if not - you can be sure T will need to compete on price and that means more cost reduction....ditto for Fiber...

Stankey should go and so should a lot of the leadership that have gotten T into this position. Bottom line - don't move for a company that is likely to lay you off and is in 2 commodity businesses...Best of luck to you and your family.

Everyone saying St. Louis is part of wave two is incorrect. That is just for one particular Organization. There are a lot of operational people who are considered national support they are located all across the United States, including St. Louis. There are people in my org located there they were asked to move in declined and are off payroll now. St. Louis is much more than just Jeremy Legg wave 2.

They don't expect anyone to move. Never did. Relo request = you have been laid off. Even if you manage to get to the new location with a job, it will be gone within the year. If you could not see this coming you have not been in this business very long.

Wave 2 doesn't even send put official notices til next year. So once again, this post is most likely false. Or OP is a bottom performer and got cut because of their performance. Definitely not related to the relocation layoffs.

Quit being loyal to a company that just doesn't care. Employees are nothing but a commodity to at&t, you may perceive yourself as a special blue chipper, but the company doesn't. They will replace anyone at the drop of a hat.

"St louis is part of wave 2 that hasn't started.
Seems like you're just spreading lies amd stoking fears."

People were told that their future jobs would be located in Dallas. The OP never said he actually moved yet. He just said that he would. I have a friend in a very similar situation.
Seems like you are the one spreading lies.

I feel empathy for the OP. I have another friend who relocated to Dallas a few years ago during the collaboration zone era. He was such a committed AT&T employee. Several months later, although he did not get laid off, he got rebadged to Tech Mahendra. It's definitely a risky undertaking, and I personally wouldn't advise anyone to move unless they really wanted to go there anyway, for reasons unrelated to AT&T. I believe the OP said he had familly in Dallas. That's a good reason, but with interest rates and the state of the real estate market, moving is riskier than ever. Best of luck to all who are faced with this.

I have always heard there can be lots of opportunities if you go to Dallas. However, AT&T is not stable at all. No way in heck should anyone move for this company. They could cut you the second you walk into HQ. There are so many expenses with moving unless taking a massive promotion, I fail to see the financial upside.

I am sorry to hear you got laid off. However, this might be the best case for you. I would have hated to see you move and then get hit. Good luck in your job search friend.

One has nothing to do with the other. Every job had to be classified as to where it belonged, and that started a process of asking some people if they'd move or not.

That has nothing to do with whether your VP has an approaching budget problem. Clearly he does and he didn't get enough "I will quit" answers out of the move thing to cover it.

The sad thing is, most supervisors always have a sense of who they'd cut next if asked to, whether based on performance, future need for particular skills, whatever. You have to. But it's not like you can go around telling people "if it happens, you're next". I guess I would have a hard time seeing someone plan to move when I suspect he's a dead man walking, but I'm not really sure what I'd be able to say to them proactively.

If anyone is planning to uproot their family and move, I would say have a face to face with your boss and ask hard questions about your future and your standing in the team. If he tells you good things but seems shifty and uncomfortable, well... At the very least, rent don't buy, and get an agent to rent yours out. Give yourself an out.

ATT has made people move in the past thinking they would quit or retire. When they didn’t they laid them off after they moved. At least you saved expenses. If you aren’t in a hub you will probably get laid off anyway. Don’t move for ATT.
