Survival tips post redundancy

It's been a few months since my role was made redundant, so I'm over the shock, and most of the anger. Most importantly I'm moving on, so I wanted to share a few lessons I've learned that may help some of my ex-coleagues on here who are stuggling.

  1. It's not about you - This may be an ageist numbers game / culture war, but it was never about you personally, so take a breath and move on knowing that you are still the awesome person you always were.
  2. Team up! - A bunch of us in London formed a post-redundancy support group, where we kepp each other sane, share experiences, advice, etc. This is the one most valuable thing I've done post redundancy. Don't do this solo, reach out to others you you and form a suport group. We meet weekly via Teams / GoogleMeet.
  3. 2 page CV - Yes, even with your experience, you can have a two page CV. Each role should be 3 bullets of key achievements with a list of key skills used. It's an advert to get you an interview, not a job, so the purpose is to intriege.
  4. LinkedIn Premium, feh! - There is an industry preying on the out fo work and scared. People selling magic AI CV reviews, secret lists of "headhunters", etc. LinkedIn Premium is a little useful, but way overpriced. You don't need it, but get it if you can afford it.

Just trying to add a little positivity in here to help any of you who got cut. It's a long slog to get another role, but we can do it.

Well you do have to do your job. It’s actually pretty hard to stand out enough to get a PIP…

My ‘redundancy’ was most definitely personal.. Former (thankfully) manager was a narcissist who could not accept others views. Always saw it as a threat. Happy with checking the box instead of doing what was needed. Could not be challenged. Had to be the smartest person in the room. Would not define team roles or responsibilities. Made decisions without informing team. Could not handle conflict. Dishonest. Worst manager in 40 years of overall work experience.

Thank you for this! Very helpful.
It is totally not personal, but extremely painful and mine specifically was a huge financial betrayal by what really truly is a stinky, rigged and extremely unethical company.
Yes, I am also in a positive former employees group and it is comforting.
Same boat as you; let go a few months ago too.

Thanks again, I needed to read this

Use ChatGPT to spruce up your resume. There are a ton of resources online to give you tips on how to use it best such as prompting it ask you questions about your role so it understand what you did, you can feed it STAR bullets and have it summarize into concise bullets, feed it your resume and a job description and have it make adjustments to match better, and even have it generate interview prep questions based on a job description or resume. Get creative with it

It's been a few months since I was made redundant and whilst it's been tough i am excited about what next.

My next employer is going to be so lucky to have me (yes those career coaches do work - lol 😆)

@OP - Excellent post. I'd just add one more thing - work your networks. After I was made redundant from BNY Mellon, I reached out to vendors and industry associates in my field with whom I had served on various roundtables for my area of expertise. One of them had left their position and started a new company. We talked and I landed a BAH gig doing what I loved. It can happen, stay positive everyone!
