Some Orgs aren't telling Wave 2 their Off Payroll date

So, at least for some, the policy seems to be that if you declined to move for Wave 2, they won't tell you your off payroll date until 2 weeks before. How are we supposed to manage projects and work if we know someone is leaving, but it might be in a couple of weeks, or it might not be for 6 months?

My thought is that by keeping it secret there is a better chance of the employee finding other employment and leaving before the 2 weeks notice, save the company the cost of severance.

But what a--holes. If I was in Wave 2 and declined the move, I'd be doing nothing except showing up.

I'm in wave two. I told them I wouldn't relocate. They told me I'll be off the books by December 2024. I have no idea when I'll actually lose my job. The longer they keep me, the higher my bonus will be next year, and I get a 50% severance package. So, let the waiting game commence.

When did you make the decision for Wave 2? Just got my letter to be in hub by November. Trying to gauge when my termination date would be if I decide not to move.

All 50 states and D.C are at-will employment states. However some states have public policy (45), implied contract (36) (hard to prove) and statutory exceptions(11). Basically unless the company is breaking a state or federal statute or can be proved to engage in discriminatory practices in surplussing you, they can terminate you for any other reason or no reason. You also would give up any chance of severance to pursue these, so you better have an ironclad case and a good employment attorney.

“to be honest if you refuse you should be off payroll immediately.”

With mentality like that it’s even more reason to lie.

I’ll convince them to give me a year to move, make a big show of it, then be like “oh sorry another opportunity came a long where I didn’t have to move and they offered me more money, bye” at the 11 month mark.

Simply put, AT&T is an at will employer

Not true - the state’s laws dictate this.

“Just know this, if they don’t get enough people in wave 2 to leave early, they will start to tap into people in the hubs.”

Start? Where have you been? There have been plenty of layoffs in hubs including this week.

Who cares. AT&T is yesterday’s news - irrelevant. Get out if you can otherwise grab management by the short hairs and get all you can as “management” doesn’t give a sh-t about any human.

Just know this, if they don’t get enough people in wave 2 to leave early, they will start to tap into people in the hubs. With revenue not growing, cutting cost and head-count is the strategy for rest of ‘24.

Simply put, AT&T is an at will employer. Many job position requirements are changing. No othet explanation is needed.

OP you are so right !

Employees “have notice for over a year” !!!

My org just got move letters - signatures due in a month. Must move by November 1. Sambar/Choy/Wilson org.

No one know off payroll date them and us.
And the selection makes no sense. They say they want the group in once place but the rest of this org is all over the country.

Lawyers are liking T making no business sense
same job functions being done in the rest of the org in all kind of locations. People who were supposed to leave lied and they are still working…
leadership selection is through personal who they like/don’t like. This is just too lame - lacking REAL business need.
AT&T should share official date and help impacted employees and working employees understand the selection process and exceptions all over this small organization.
Simply put why this one and not that one?

Sambar: Do better for your soon to be former employees and the ones staying. Be transparent as you always say!

Impacted employees have had notice for over a year and chose not to move. This has been more than enough time to prepare. If an employee was really planning to provide training and documentation on “critical” aspects of the job this would have already happened.

The layoff date is going to depend how much in a hole their org’s budget is. The bigger the deficit the quicker they will cut people. From what I’ve heard all budgets are way over for 1st quarter.

This is why you just lie, say you’re going to move, keep showing up and doing nothing, while looking for other work…just run down the clock, then bounce unexpectedly and tell them to shove it while producing not a lot of value, but enough for them to not notice you’re not doing anything.
