Because many of them … can’t … or won’t? (Either) from one who has done it successfully elsewhere.
- They want to micromanage or tear your drafts apart for no real reason? Ask them three questions for every one of theirs and then ask for a meeting to discuss the answers.
- When they tell you to do something, don’t bother figuring it out yourself. It’s their job to get you the tools and resources you need. Keep telling them you’re stuck and don’t do any more work until they offer a solution.
- Don’t work more than 40 hours. If they can’t get back to you timely or are putting their own deadlines at jeopardy by their indecision or procrastination … well, you’ll get it done when you can.
- Play bingo. Every large call has a lot of managers who always say the same ridiculous things. See how many squares you can fill.
- The only cure for employee attrition and morale is knowing you have fair managers who have your back. Knowing this is unlikely here, try not to invest overmuch into getting them to like you. Stay neutral and firm and protect your boundaries.
- If you’re an unfortunate soul who gets screamed at on a call for being a messenger, just shrug and nod sympathetically so that fathead doesn’t have a cardiac arrest and then go home and laugh at them
All of them are really to be pitied, but they are too clueless to know it. People with real skills will always be in demand; WF managers … not so much
