She died in her cubicle and wasn’t found for days: Exposing myths about in-office work

"It becomes evident that the drive to return employees to the office is not necessarily about their well-being or improved collaboration but often about control, visibility and maintaining the status quo.

"The push for in-office work is often framed as an attempt to combat isolation and enhance teamwork, but the truth seems to lie elsewhere. Instead of being about employee welfare, it may be more about outdated ideas on managerial control and resistance to change, as found in recent research led by Mark Ma and Yuye Ding at the University of Pittsburgh. This compulsion not only creates a toxic work environment but also perpetuates a lack of genuine engagement among employees."

Not sure if you remember, but a few years back a “team member” (the term is “employee” since Charlie took over) died in an accident on an airplane? The panel next to her seat or the window blew out. Anyway, WF had a tribute posted on Teamworks for weeks.

The truly shameful part of this sad story is that Wells Fargo never sent any company wide communication indicating they held a scintilla of remorse. Maybe they sent something to folks in the Tempe building Denise worked in… I am not aware. I will say (my opinion) this completely undermines the entire RTO unicorns 🦄 and rainbows 🌈 collaboration garbage management is trying to shove down our throats. I’d much rather die at home than alone in some $&#! cube farm. I can’t help but run Office Space scenes through my head with the workplace stuff WF has pushed the last couple years at employees. Final thoughts for Denise are RIP. My condolences to her family. Such a sad way to go… alone and unbothered .

I hope it comes out that Denise was the only one from her team in AZ so in-office collaboration can be seen as a complete joke. Even better, I hope we find out the bulk of her team is located in India and Philippines so it also exposes just how many jobs are being sent there at record pace.

So true. I work regularly with my team that are all in other offices and we work great. Probably the best collaboration I ever had. Bosses who want to see their people don’t actually know what’s being done. They substitute presence for productivity.
