Thread regarding Qualcomm Inc. layoffs

During the last layoff in December.....

  1. Most of the people who had bad performance 3.5 and under were affected.

  2. Or people who had personal issues with colleagues or managers.

  3. Or the people who contested the review process (like me), when I got a lower rating than someone else who does nothing but ass licking. (I thought it would be a fair communication like adults) I was a star performer though. Got many Qualstars :P

So to be safe from layoffs, be a good performing, manager's ass licking, obedient worker. Else you might get axed first.

I totally agree with OP. I was in the exact same position in December. I had a coworker take a leave of absence for six months to produce more babies. While this "person" was out I was covering both of our duties. She was tightly entangled with the management structure above her. She would have parties at her house where the director of IT, the senior manager, the senior staff manager and everybody else except me. They would never invite me. It was territorialism and ass-kissing at its worst. I got a scathing review even though I solved many operational issues that arose as well as did both of our jobs. My manager didn't even write my review. My coworker came back and wrote it for him. Not a lot you can do. You can try and fit in but someone is cock blocking you even if they don't have one, you're fed and shown the door. No matter how nice you are and no matter who else likes you. there are these groups in QUALCOMM of useless people who band together and protect each other. JANA partners should probably fire everyone in management and replace them. The problem isn't the engineers, no matter what country they're from. The problem is the political infrastructure and groups that band together and to save each other's jobs. If they don't want you to be part of their click then they'll just exclude you by cutting you out of meetings and reducing your workload. F you, you are the people that ruined the company

I was a good performer (more than 6 years @ QC) with lots of Qualstars and rating of 4 out of 5.. was discussing my promotion in last review and got axed in December. It's how things are :) You never know when its your turn. I didn't have any personal issues but I sure wasn't the fit in the group. Socializing with seniors is not my forte so was probably missing a connection to take care of me. Being connected with folks up in the chain is a very important aspect it seems.

Good luck folks!

I am with you. Review process sucks, no value for third party reviews in sight of management. They hire their favorites( who does nothing but ppl management, good for nothing) and protect them, so they don't get bad reputation. Management and review process sucks.

If you doesn't ass lick, what ever might be the rating doesn't matter, you are axed. I know few who are good at that

I'm with you. The review process stinks if you are not in graces. Think of it from legal standpoint: it means lost revenue and psihical trauma. Keep all records in case you need them.
