Project Goldtouch will study and quantify the amount of time wasted by RSI Nanny software locking workers keyboards several times a day. Now that's a project that really should be given the go ahead.
Let's all take a f*cking micropause to think about how useful and pointless this software really is, and how much time, critical thinking, and flow of work it interupts for those struggling to produce and contribute. There is already enough distraction and interuption in our worklives to prevent RSIs from occuring. This is nothing but a "protect the company from lawsuits app".
Quantify this:
Over 15 minutes of my day are taken away each time a stupid RSI stupid break occures. Take the original 1-5 minutes that it takes to run and then add to that another 5 minutes to answer any IM's that occured while locked or get out of the conversation while walking back to my desk that was started by the weird urinal conversation starter, and if I'm lucky maybe another 5 to remember the last damn thing I was going to type and erase the sorry crap I did type while panic typing before the virtual gymnastics class kicks off. So I between the breaks and micropauses we're looking at a minimum of an hour a day of fractional, unproductive time that this fantastic application forces me to endure. To keep it easy-peasy if 2000 other CVX'ers encounter the same challenges getting back into productivity we are looking at 2000 lost manhours PER day at a corporate level that could be more effectively used to manage and execute our companies objectives. You can play with the time and numbers of people that experience this, and argue this or that, but it still adds up to wasted time that far exceeds in one week any amount of days away from work that we have achieved through keyboard or mouse related injuries. Let's leave it up to the smart employees we claim we have to make their own judgements and observations regarding when it's time to take a break and do our bottom line a major favor.
