Negotiating your severance package?

I've heard from several people that you are asked to sign your RIF paperwork as soon as you are called into HR but you are legally allowed 2 weeks to sign it. I have also heard that you can refuse to sign it and possibly get an attorney's advice to negotiate some more severance or stock awards that you earned.

Anyone have experience or heard anything about this?

I've seen this company always hand out big settlements even when they were right to just get rid of things.

This is BS....they have a standard practice based on number of years with the company....also if someone is asking you to sign a severance package immediately then they are wrong...the document says you get like 45 days to decide.

They are giving random weeks some got anywhere from 16 to 26 with employees all over 30 years. Base pay figured on random hours - 44 to 54. Nothing done fairly.

I don't remember much about signing any papers but that was a few years ago in the 2009 crash when they laid off due to a changing business philosophy. Corporate lawyers are rarely stupid and they counsel the mis management very carefully on these matters so they will not be in trouble. HR counsels the mis management also to keep them away from the personnel and out of those pesky little pissing matches that can pop up when a young, too quickly promoted mis manager says something stupid to an employee. In the end it is mainly up to the twit in the office to keep his mouth shut. My poor excuse for an ops manager sat on the other side of the room and hid his face during my layoff, never said 'sorry', 'tough' or even 'drop dead'.

As explained to me by a lawyer. you have to have to meet 3 conditions to have a chance of winning against them. 1. Been done wrong (yes you were fired); 2. Be a member of a protected class (age, sex race). (yes, I was 60 years old). 3. have a document showing you were chosen due to age, race or gender, (tough one, Unless your manager or HR was really stupid you will never find such documentation. So take the severance offered and move on.

I never was asked to sign anything got laid off from Duncan and they act your a criminal afterwards never went back for another layoff

40 year hand here. Let go. Saw one of the best lawyers on the subject.Said it would be a long battle. And then you might lose. Better to take the 13-15 weeks offered. Halliburton lawyers :) ave done there job. Unless it's sex or race. Then you might have a chance

Found them to be above board and helpful, negotiate, didn't try, but they lived up to the policy and were very timely. They advise to seek professional advice before signing. HR were very approachable and helpful, tho my guess is that much depends on who you are dealing with and how you approach. Disappointed to ge but after 30 yrs, I had a good run, field and office all over the world... Best of luck
