It doesnt take a rocket scientist to realize that splitting the Q is a bad idea. We just need to get rid of the useless people who work here. From what it looks like. Maybe 3 out of 10 people actually do their job right. We need to become more edficient. The competition has already caught up and its not only us anymore. There needs to be a purge so we can get rid of the leeches. Or we will be eating the competitors dirt soon.

That's easy to answer. Each eng hired by the corrupt management, as a favor, had a spouse, other family members that they needed to bring in. Even today I see spouses being hired, for the same group? Numbers rack up really fast with folks being hired based on mostly recommendation from some engr and some namesake interview.
from what i saw, don't agree with a few of the people that got let go, and who got to stay. getting out of there asap. no future there. some of the indians are decent engineers, but wtf why did they go overboard and hire so many.
3rdg: I sort of disagree. With the right qualified folks at the director+ level would have resulted in making better decisions and also with better quality engineers (interested in climbing ladder the right way rather then sucking up) the work env would not be so toxic.
When Nokia mobile division was going through turbulence (spiral death), helpless employees were a lot more together and going to work was not that of a horrible feeling as it is here.
Q needs to get rid of the old boys clubs along with their buddies that were hired based on connections alone. They need to look at Quic seriously. There are some pretty bad reviews about the management in Quic LA (director + level) on glassdoor as well.
I agree with the corruption and ghetto culture arguments, but even if this was not happening Q would still be in trouble because it's an expensivee one trick crapdragon pony in a highly commodity market.
Of course they are... Join company, make it your hub, bring in folks circumventing the hiring process in place, weaken the company with the corrupt ghetto culture...
Then when ship is sinking, look for another ship to embark and find and exploit loop holes in the hiring process and/or lower the standard of the hiring process to bring in low quality folks into the new hub and repeat...

Saying poor is just an understatement. Corrupt is more like it. From what i have seen they have followed unfair policies for hiring people and now that things are not working out, they choose to move to another ship where they can breed this same unfair ways of hiring and pulling in their "buddies" ..

Why not just get rid of every 4th VP and director by random process and then see where it leaves the company?
Trim the pay of everyone at director or above by 50% and see who stays.

That is so true. These management, mostly directors with questionable management skills, after doing a lousy job are now jumping ship. Look at Quic! I hear some are and have moved to Google and are spreading/continuing on this bad culture and their usual ugly politics. Despite the great impartial hiring process to gate these kind of bad culture from percolating into Google, I am surprised how these folks are making it in...
Useful or useless is defined by head of the cluster.
No matter how hard one will try, QCOM is heading south and will eventually fail. It is not a few of useless people, it is QCOM cultural and the engineer management teams who steer the floating boat to sink, they also transfer the best engineers into the useless engineers if stay long.
Short the QCOM with tremendous confidence at around $70s and still hold the short positions, much better reward compare to daily hard working at Q and to the tiny RSUs received each year. Don't trust your managers and HRs, trust what your heart tells you!
The company is in a death spiral. Its been in one for years (it just wasn't apparent to most, but it was to people who have been through this before), you just have to know what to look for to realize it. By the time its obvious to most people, its too late. And I'm not talking about the stock price, thats just one thing. Its marked by extreme amounts of internal politics, low productivity due to having to deal with internal corporate bloat, indecisiveness and inability to motivate people, having the company become its own enemy (in terms of just getting things done), bad people getting ahead through their own politics, and good people leaving because its just not worth dealing with things anymore. In later stages it manifests as reorganizations, restructurings, layoffs and finally a buy out. If management can motivate people, reduce corporate bloat, discover meaningful business opportunities to diversify the company, and create good will then things will turn around. Absent that, expect more spiraling down. Now that you have been warned, the burden is on you to get off your ass and contribute to change things or get up and go. Put up or shut up. If you don't do anything, its likely that you are just part of the problem.
I think people should think before they speak. There are still plenty of people out there without jobs in a very tough job market during a difficult time of year. That being said, I agree that there are several people in high ranking positions that need to move on. Depressing to see senior engineers spending time in silly mail list discussions for most of the day.

Just out of curiosity.... Were any managers, Directors or VPs actually laid off--aside from the few who actually voluntarily bailed for jobs in Silicon Valley?
@bjy. I agree. IMO, at this point it is hard to separate the efficient/good employees from the horrible usless ones. Most of the smart contributing engineers have left or are too busy planning to leave. So good ones have sortof given up and hard to tell based on their recent contribution in this low morale environment.
Would be iteresting to see how management decides who to let go... My guess is they will most likely let a lot of good smart engineers go.
One thing for sure though letting most director+ guys go is a very good bet. Specially the ones who have been here for a long time. There are way too many of them that are doing redundant work (ex in Quic) trying to fake their importance and need.
Also letting go of some Principal eng that do not really do much technical work would be a good bet. There are a bunch that cant code at all.

It can't be done, too many of the useless people have moved into position of management, even executive positions where they protect their subordinate useless people. There is no way to vet and filter employees or even structure the reporting chain where it would be possible.
I've seen good people pushed aside to be laid off or PIP'd so a pet employee can take over and struggle to the determent of the product, and guess what? That struggling employee doing a half-arsed job is counted as a "key employee" because he makes the responsibility seem more difficult than it is. Everyone who is inside the meds sees it, but we are helpless. What can be done? Can't talk to your manager, director or VP, they are either as powerless as you or they are the problem. HR is on the side of the worthless, and the few good executives that once had my respect have given up. Nothing left to do but watch the water rise and make sure you have your life vest on.
