Thread regarding Chevron Corp. layoffs

Worried about a layoff

I am a 28 year Chevron employee working overseas. I may not be able to get my Visa extended, and could be in the "Must Move" category in the Spring PDC. Has anyone heard if there will be a PDC in the Spring of 2016, or if it will be like the Fall of 2015? If you are not selected in the PDC, but can stay in your current position until near to the Fall 2016 PDC, are you allowed to take unused vacation and try again? I am too young to retire, and too old to get another good job. If I had any idea that this would happen, I would have never left the security of downstream (refinery).

For those of you laid off, you have my sympathy, and I sincerely hope that you come out on the other side better off than you were with the company. I would like to ask you if you were laid off, or if you went into the PDC and were not selected? Two of my coworkers checked the box for being willing to accept severance and they were not selected, so they retired. It was nice for them, since they were ready to go, and it left a spot for someone who wanted a job. My PMP was a +2 last year, and I expect it to be the same when the 2015 results come out. Have any of you been rated a +2 or a 1 and not been selected in the PDC? This will be my first experience with the PDC, because when I got this overseas position, it was off cycle, and they were looking for people to fill jobs that no one really wanted. I am a PSG 21 if that makes a difference on what the likelihood of selection is.

There will not be a PDC for 2016 and for sure petrotech bonus will be cut... Probably CIP as well.

Thanks @3qrt. I am grateful to Chevron and the colleagues I worked with for 26 years. I'll remember my career with good memories. One has to embrace the positives and cast away the negatives in life and career to be happy. I'm more fortunate than many. Sometimes it's a question of attitude.

Who says you must shoot yo the PSG scale so quickly? I came across this thread to my surprise. I have 26 years with Chevron. I was laid off this month at PSG 20 (that's right). I never felt like I was screwed by the company. My pension lump sum was $655,000 but my 401k balance reached $993,000. Do you think I did poorly?

How are you 28 years into your career with the company and only a PSG 21?

oh, 28 years with the company....yes, I imagine it would be hard to find a job somewhere else.

If you are 33, you think you are smart but nobody else does.

DWEP has been taking many of those must move expats already (30-40 at least) with more to come. DWEP is the only BU that still has some money and it appears as if the corporation is 'parking' bunch of employees there, who they want to keep even if there aren't any jobs for them in DWEP.

if you have downstream experience you may be able to get back into downstream, either with Chevron or another company.

Thank you for the reply, but I wish I was still a young man.

Too young to retire, but too old to work at Taco Bell.

To the OP, you sound like a bright young man who thinks things clearly and long range. I hope you are successful in keeping a career with Chevron.

Thank you for the replies. At this point I will be saying yes to any job that they offer in the ROM PDC. I am one of those people who has never worked anywhere but Chevron (I joined right after leaving the military), and it is really frightening to think of having to go somewhere else. I am even willing to give up my PSG and go back to being a refinery operator if I have to.

Are most of you highly educated engineer types? I would think that you guys could find work pretty easily.

The spring PDC is going to be a rom process, at least for upstream. The focus will be getting expats back to home countries. Problem is, there won't be as many jobs to go back to so many will be left standing. I hope expats have been saving their money because spring will be ugly. Get the resume ready and start job hunting. Hold on to your butts.

The overseas location could hurt, or help you. It really depends on the region. I know they were pushing expats out of the SASBU (South African) region, slowly trying to get them to become all Angolan passport roles. Other business units have done better.

There will be a Spring PDC, but it could (likely) also be another ROM cycle. The current layoffs were based on $60 bbl oil pricing. With WTI sitting in the $30s, and CVX already announcing an additional 6000-7000 layoffs to the media, it is clear what will happen in 1Q-2Q of 2016.

Very few staff were simply laid off. They were put through the ROM process, essentially re-applying for their jobs. Our group had about 600 staff, but only 280 jobs were posted in the ROM. Some felt the ROM process was an exercise in futility, as if they already had picked who would be staying or going. A lot of 20+ year staff were screwed at the end, getting cut before they hit full points on their pensions. Job security, and company loyalty, are both things of the past. If you are worried, start networking now. Get your resume freshened up. Start building your alternate plan, just in case you need it. Every month counts, in these times.
