I lucked out and managed to make it beyond regular retirement age. I have to emphasize that after retiring from IBM a year ago I have basked in the luxury of no stress, actual family time, relaxing outdoor activities, museum visits, realization that a job doesn't define me, etc. It's no joke. I wish I hadn't waited so long.
To those who can't quite swing it yet, make IBM secondary and spruce up the resume and make your full time job a search for something better.
For those of us with no retirement packages after 20plus years it's hard too take. They call at a plan but it's a joke. Glad someone will enjoy a retirement truly. I'll be working at Walmart with today's corporate retirement plans.
If you are in your 40s or younger it's impossible to retire today - everything is becoming much more expensive and wages are stagnant #stagnantwages - nothing will help here as the issue is systemic. Your best shot is to climb the ladder and reach the levels that would pay you handsomely (probably 300K or more) and that may allow you to save a bit if you are frugal.
Also, if you are in high cost areas like SF, NYC or LA - you are out of luck even on 300K+
