Thread regarding Halliburton Co. layoffs

What can you really do? People will lose their jobs and I am not immune to it either. If this makes ONE person Happier then that is great.

It is sad to see all the hate and discontent that emerges in some of these comments. Even North verses South??? I myself don’t agree with some of the rash actions taking place without thinking first.

My suggestion (take it or leave it) to the non-happy people is to GET OUT OF THE OILFIELD and try a different commodity industry. I have been there and done that. No matter what company you work for, many do the same as Halliburton when a downturn occurs. An auto manufacturer is one example. Many other companies not associated with Oil do the same thing.

If it makes you feel better to throw a fit about the situation by all means do it.

Here is how I stay a mostly sane during all this (No I am NOT perfect):

I was not owed a job at Halliburton when I applied.

I personally accepted the offer and job I have knowing the conditions of a large company’s way of business for profit. (NO MATTER WHAT A PERSON AT A COMPANY SAYS ABOUT “We are Family” or “Job for Life” etc. Those are words learned at University in Business classes focused on employee morale.

Basically, I made a choice to join a commodity based company.

I am in Bill payoff mode no matter how small of a dent I can take out of them.

Lastly, what is going to happen WILL and there is NOTHING I can do about it NOW! This is in reference to comments about butt kissers. They already may have solidified their place. And some have not.

Finally, I am very empathetic (Truly Sorry) to all persons trying to raise a family and be happy. This situation breaks my heart just as much as you even if I were to get to keep my job. I am working a day at a time now and it took a year for me to get to that frame of mind.

My hope is that this post does not get people irritated.

BUT GUESS WHAT? There is nothing I can do if there are any derogatory comments in this thread. Try to have a good day if you can. My thoughts go out to all that have lost their jobs so far and I could be next.

You are absolutely correct! I especially love the part about not being owed anything when you CHOSE to accept the position! I've said it before, I'll say it again; anyone who hasn't figured out to save, pay down debt and be cautious isn't going to ever figure it out! Why can't people just be thankful for the opportunity they had while it was available? I know not everyone is going to agree with me, but I'm telling you the secret to life is to be thankful. What if all you had tomorrow was what you were thankful for today?

I am the author of the main post. As one of you said, Halliburton owes me nothing but pay for the work I do. Thank you for adding words I missed. When I start thinking Halliburton, General Electric, Ford Motor Co., or ANY for profit company (Capitalism) owes me something and not focus on MY career, I'm in a bad state of affairs. Thank you for adding that. And for the record, I am not in management.

I accept my talents may not be needed some day and only a select few know when that time will come. Thank you all again.

We didn't all trade time for money because the pay at Halliburton was never great, a lot of us were forced to get called for a job when we were busy and gave up a lot of family time around holidays and special times in our family lives, because we either did it, or didn't have a job. Also a lot of us gave up a lot of personal time to Halliburton with the idea that we would get further, or move up in the company rather than get crapped on in the end. You cant use the time vs money aspects because the money was never high enough to outweigh the lossed time. If Halliburton management would have handled the situation with more transparency and openness I believe that there would have been less anger. You cant say that "nobody would've known it was going to get this bad" if that were true we need new leaders that understand the market better, and better management that can forecast even 3 months out. A lot of managers in October were saying we predict a turn around in the first course of 2016, Really? where did they get this information and what made them say that. The management is shortsighted and full of kiss asses consistently jockeying for position to get their lips on the correct ass. and amazingly those people are all still around with no real work to do.

That is true no one owed anything in a downturn. I view my relationship with the Hal similar to a vending machine. Your time is a simple transaction with the company and nothing more including this mythical family. Loose the emotional tie and let supply/demand sway who your company family will be in your career. Bottom line you need to de-lever your career from the company you work not the other way around. Your current employer will respect you more as well

Couldn't agree more.

This is a very valuable service that isn't reaching its full potential due to way too much vitriol and efforts on the the part of a small minority to be funny. Or worse, use this venue to even petty scores. Companies like Halliburton don't tell anybody about layoffs. They could be walking people out of the building next to mine and nobody would necessarily know. This is one very good way to get that perspective that senior management reserves for themselves. It's a perspective we all could benefit from.

I have little hope that things will change a lot but if just a few people out there decide to keep their contributions to a higher level, it would make this forum a much better place.

Thanks for posting. I've been here almost 40 years. To those that cry about giving Hal the best years of their lives...I didn't give Hal anything. Hal paid me for that time. And Hal doesn't owe me a single thing more than my pay for my time. I've been able raise a family on my trade of time for money. Hal is not a non-profit charity organization. When they don't need people, they're under no obligation to keep them on the payroll. To those that think you have to be butt kisser to stay here...you're wrong. I've seen them come and I've seen them go. Most of the people left at my site are those that keep their head down, do their job, and don't cry about every little thing they somehow feel entitled to.

Like most everyone else, I may get laid off the next time I go to work. That's business. That's life. The current global economic situation isn't Hal's fault. But like everyone else, we have to react to it. For once in my life it's good to be older and close to retirement. I really do feel bad for the younger people that are still raising a family. I've been there. I've been as poor as you can be without living on the street. My job at Hal pulled me out of that. But I've worked hard for my entire career to make myself as necessary as possible. I've never said "no". I've volunteered for every challenge. Apparently I'm a butt kisser and didn't know it till now.

A lot of people post here thinking they're funny. About as funny as a fart in church. A lot of people post bitter comments here. I imagine they're just bitter people who probably do deserve some sympathy. If it makes you feel better, I pity you.
