yes, that's exactly what I'm doing @1zlf. :) I have a 2nd interview this week for exactly what I'm looking for which I honestly didn't think I'd find (close to home, can wear jeans, flexible hours working around my schedule, nice people, fun, and no stress). Also one that doesn't offer medical as the IRS rules around COBRA state we could be fined 110% if offered medical, and turn it down. That exact job possibility literally landed i my lap. :)

And you're right about less pay. It's half but that doesn't bother me in the least. Once I get something part time nailed down I have a few non-profits I'll be contacting to fill in some time volunteering as well. :)

I'd LOVE a startup (they are fun to work for) but not if I have to commute far for one, darn it. LOL I wonder why they are concentrating on Downtown PDX & the east side and not in Hilllsboro?

@Kz4EFwN-1bti. Commute issues also were a problem with the Encore opportunities in Oregon. Just about all of them were either downtown Portland or SE. I'm finding that all the hot new startups are in downtown Portland too. Without an Intel job, you are backwatered in Hillsboro without a lot of options. However, it looks like you are mostly interested in something to keep busy with, not in the make or break situation so many of the ACT people are in. In that case there might be part-time/less stress/less pay options for you. Or even nonprofits?

@Kz4EFwN-1mur. The lump sum severance for ERPers, since it is a year's pay, also puts us in a much higher tax bracket AND it makes my Medicare premiums go through the roof. I wish they could have issued regular bi-weekly checks with the usual deduction for 401K but that was not legally possible. I think taxes will be messy this year. I also sold a bunch of stock, thinking the severance would surely be delayed, but I got paid promptly. Wish I had left those RSUs alone--more to tax.

Thanks OP for posting this. The severance would have lasted longer but the damn taxes in Oregon took about 39% and with NO deductions for retirement allowed. (IRS considers this non-earned income). Something to think about for the next ACT people.

Garmin is a great place to work. If you do decide to work for Garmin in Salem remember the cost of living in Salem is a lot lesser than the Portland Metro area. I know people who sold their homes in Hillsboro purchased a nicer home for less in Salem and are very happy. Salem has a small town feeling compared to the Portland Metro area in my opinion.

Well, Intel salaries, like I said, maybe are way above what the salaries should be in Oregon.

Last I heard, Jive was down to 200 employees in Oregon. They moved to the Bay awhile ago. If you find a job there, you'd be lucky but I would not count on it, and certainly not at an Intel level salary.

Intel employees have a sense of entitlement and are used to the inflated salaries from the days of PC dominance and IA monopoly. In Oregon, their salaries are triple and more of the general market.

The startups don't pay anywhere near Intel, and don't give a rip about your i86 smarts. Most if not all are software not hardware or manufacturing. The LHH consultant told me she was shocked at the salary expectations, and worse, the unwillingness to face reality, lower expectations and maybe (gasp) reduce lifestyle. Or relocate. As to Jive specifically, they've been having trouble and waves of layoffs and will probably be sold if they are lucky.

They would not consider you anyway. Be realistic.

i would, hence me making a comment about it. Everyone's circumstances are not the same. Maybe you don't care where the job is but I don't need a job, I want something part time close to home for something to do. Period.

So..... I'm not looking to go downtown, even for a day. If I was hard up for a job that would be an altogether different story... 'Beggers can't be choosers' as the saying goes.

Ok, looks like that map IS one of the hot spots for startups. If you are a sys admin, software, DBA,etc, and you aren't looking around this corridor, you're missing out of a lot of potential opportunities.

I've only spent about 45 minutes snooping around this map, and I already see a dozen or so other startup companies...

Holy shet.Now I know why JiveSoftware sounds so familiar. One of my previous employers used them. Looking at their job listing, it appears the Portland OR location is data center.

...For startups, even if they don't have an advertised opening, find out if they have an HR email, or hiring email and just email them a soft copy of a resume.. For some small companies, they don't like to advertise job openings because some tend to think they are special and want to operate in "stealth mode", which to some extent is b---s---, because eventually everyone knows what everyone is working on...eventually. Nevertheless, every startup wants to feel they are hot sh--, so they often have a big head :)... Humor them....

..Lastly, I would NOT rule out a job simply because of the commute. You could interview for the job, if they like you, you get the job, then worry about the commute. If they really like you, you might be able to work something out like remote office, especially for IT/Admin type work....

I've got one guy that worked remotely from L.A. though he's suppose to be in Bay Area. I've got another guy that accepted an offer to move to Bay Area and then changed his mind, and we ended up just letting him work remotely too.

Just saying, you never know where the cards land. Looking for a job often times is more a game of probability, and all you can do is just increase your odds.

And you can probably move around the map to see what other startups/small companies around this area because this appears to be a tech hot spot. I wouldn't know because I'm not from Oregon.

There's also a Church of Scientology nearby I think if that's your thing.

Anyone know how to easily find out where a company is locally located? I found that pretty hard when Googling for a very large company (say... Amazon, Yahoo, etc.). I like to know the exact address because I don't want to bother to apply if it's not somewhere I care to commute to.

Thank you OP. I am a EE (4yr degree) hardware engineer, and applied for a tech position months ago and did not get so much as a call back. I will send out another resume and go from there again. I think the economy might be getting better for high tech in Oregon.

The reason why Garmin is low cost and able to play in the low margin business is because they are incorporated in Switzerland and HQ is in Kansas BTW.

If you want to compete against foreign competition, that cost structure has to come from somewhere
