To close on the story , Oracle SPARC and Solaris is dead. Of course the spin to story (for customers) is that they will be releasing minors, but that's just running in a wind with candle. If I were a customer, I would get off from Solaris , and probably Oracle cloud. Why would I want to stay with Solaris when only 25% of the workforce is left ?
The best part about all the hw division layoffs is this : all the engineers are let off, but higher up executives in Solaris who did precious little over the years to make Solaris a success , and confided themselves to make empty noises for their own bosses to keep them happy, are still driving the teams. There is no change in leadership. So, if you have same drivers driving the bus, not sure why the hope is that this next time the bus doesn't end up in a ditch.
It's very bad that 1000s of engineers have been affected, but higher up executives are still merrily fleeting around , keeping their bosses happy, and of course blaming the economy for product failures without taking any personal responsibility for lack of direction and influence on product over the years.
The lack of leadership in Solaris divisions is pretty glaring - it wasn't even used in Oracle cloud , not even in SaaS, where the OS versioning is irrelevant to customer. When this was unfolding over the years, why weren't senior leaders in Solaris taken to task ?
The infighting to go over the scrambles in leftover orgs is widespread, competitive engineers are looking outside , and senior leadership who perfectly well know that they will be unable to find a jobs outside are holding on to their jobs with their teeth.
If I were making the decisions as a business owner, the first one that I would let go over a failed division would be the leadership, and get some external hired leadership to infuse some energy to "drive the bus". Not the other way around :( , blame and ditch all passengers when the bus is in a hole, but leave the driver as is. There are plenty more f hungry and good leaders out there, and frankly , what more does Solaris have left to lose ?
Oracle is installing email , and laptop monitoring agents to monitor layoff.com for its employees. And, not even 10% of the inside stories are out, but some executives want to just commit murder and hope their is absolutely no noise. While the claim is that competitors are using this for their advantage, and some of it might be true,. but the real fear is that these uncompetitive executives will be exposed, and they will be forced into retirement - because frankly I don't know if many of them will be able to even find a job even 20% as decent as their current cushy jobs in the real world.
