Thread regarding Oracle Corp. layoffs

Oracle SPARC layoff - is driver of bus to be blamed for the accident ?

To close on the story , Oracle SPARC and Solaris is dead. Of course the spin to story (for customers) is that they will be releasing minors, but that's just running in a wind with candle. If I were a customer, I would get off from Solaris , and probably Oracle cloud. Why would I want to stay with Solaris when only 25% of the workforce is left ?

The best part about all the hw division layoffs is this : all the engineers are let off, but higher up executives in Solaris who did precious little over the years to make Solaris a success , and confided themselves to make empty noises for their own bosses to keep them happy, are still driving the teams. There is no change in leadership. So, if you have same drivers driving the bus, not sure why the hope is that this next time the bus doesn't end up in a ditch.

It's very bad that 1000s of engineers have been affected, but higher up executives are still merrily fleeting around , keeping their bosses happy, and of course blaming the economy for product failures without taking any personal responsibility for lack of direction and influence on product over the years.

The lack of leadership in Solaris divisions is pretty glaring - it wasn't even used in Oracle cloud , not even in SaaS, where the OS versioning is irrelevant to customer. When this was unfolding over the years, why weren't senior leaders in Solaris taken to task ?

The infighting to go over the scrambles in leftover orgs is widespread, competitive engineers are looking outside , and senior leadership who perfectly well know that they will be unable to find a jobs outside are holding on to their jobs with their teeth.

If I were making the decisions as a business owner, the first one that I would let go over a failed division would be the leadership, and get some external hired leadership to infuse some energy to "drive the bus". Not the other way around :( , blame and ditch all passengers when the bus is in a hole, but leave the driver as is. There are plenty more f hungry and good leaders out there, and frankly , what more does Solaris have left to lose ?

Oracle is installing email , and laptop monitoring agents to monitor layoff.com for its employees. And, not even 10% of the inside stories are out, but some executives want to just commit murder and hope their is absolutely no noise. While the claim is that competitors are using this for their advantage, and some of it might be true,. but the real fear is that these uncompetitive executives will be exposed, and they will be forced into retirement - because frankly I don't know if many of them will be able to even find a job even 20% as decent as their current cushy jobs in the real world.

Get rid of JF and his direct reports, replace him with DD and his EMC contacts...let the bodies hit the floor!

Easy for them to push out spyware to company owned Windows laptops. Also easy for employees to boot Linux instead, or run a VM, or use their own device to post. Company causing itself many problems trying obsessively to keep layoffs secret when that's impossible to do.

They do know what to do. It's called get out if the HW business aquire as much as possible profitable businesses and then sell all their stock while they still can.

I agree with OP. JF, his VPs and directors are useless. The HW and Solaris architects have no vision at all. The architects just make the server and the core OS more and more complicated without aware that the outside world is all moving to cloud, devops and open source tools. I think some execs are aware of the threat from AWS and Asure but they don't know what to do.

Very few customers want Solaris cloud and even less for Sparc cloud. I mean if customers want to spend the time/money to migrate to cloud, they may as well migrate to AWS. Why stick with dying Solaris/Sparc platform. I don't understand why Oracle even start the Solaris cloud project.

Oracle's #1 priority is to keep the layoffs out of national press, by firing somebody for talking about layoffs on this site, they would be setting themselves up for yet another embarrassing lawsuit that would bring the layoffs and the hush hush way that oracle is going about them, to national attention. That don't want that and so they know better than to abuse people over it. LOL!

I've been posting on this site for years. Oracle would have fired me by now if they really monitored their laptops.

"Do some research, solaris is used in the oracle cloud, both by SaaS providers and IaaS. Where did you get your info from, IBM? HP?"

It took them years to get any Solaris presence in the oracle cloud. The reason offered was they were waiting for Sonoma, which makes zero sense. There is no technical limitation that stopped them from offering Solaris in the cloud from day one.

@LTDrdrD-5evl If they are monitoring stuff as you say, they're not doing anything with the information otherwise myself and a few others would have been sacked long ago.

@LTDrdrD-3chm re "Oracle is installing email , and laptop monitoring agents to monitor layoff.com "

If you don't think they have been doing this for years for ALL web sites, , then you are displaying an astonishing amount of naivete to put it mildly.

@LTDrdrD "Oracle is installing email , and laptop monitoring agents to monitor layoff.com for its employees". What's your proof of that ?

You can't really expect anything from a company whose sole strategy is to raise prices and acquire companies in order to get their more customers. This is a dead end where others innovate and Oracle is clearly years behind now. Java will be the next corpse: Oracle lost its gamble in court, and now Java's only a cost.

There are like 3 customers using Solaris as IaaS. Now, perhaps 2 left.

Solaris in SaaS? I think you mean on x86 storage, not OS. There is none.

well written post!

there are too many incompetent management in sparc chip design team.

some of them create new artificial problems from solved issues just to keep them busy with meetings so that they have something to write in weekly status report and yearly performance reviews!

I wish sparc team had a strong technical team that innovates (rather than current combination of NCG's guided by incompetent management and inexperienced tech leads)

Amen, brother! Way too many senior execs who add zero value at oracle, hundreds of millions to be saved by sacking them. LE, MH, SC totally incapable of getting rid of these useless execs. Probably hits too close to home for these three.
