Intel's biggest problem right now is lack of focus. One one had, Intel started listening to wall street ANALYSTS questioning intels' x86 growth in PC/Servers, which lead into a clusterfuk "diversification" into other areas, it knows nothing about such as computer security (McAfee)...While that itself didn't do that much financial damage and defocus intel too much ( since relatively speaking, McAfee wasn't a significant shift in Intel's business), Intel has steadily doubled down on stupid and invested much more time and money into other areas it has no leadership abilities, know technical prowess, and no good leaders at the helm to steer the ship in those new unchartered territories. The first disasters are it's mobile ventures, then it's the IOT ventures, and now it will be automotive and AI...
Intel management only seems to care about appeasing wall street analysts and are trying to falsely claim they have the technical prowess walk into any chip business (other than x86) and immediately be a disruptor to the markets, grabbing market share immediately off the bat from seasoned competitors heavily trenched into those businesses, spending billions in sectors it has yet to turn any profit in.
Meanwhile, as it defocuses on x86 to venture off into these "growth businesses" unsuccessfully, it lets "old intel's" bread and butter businesses languish and fall behind...Hence, how AMD is now able to be competitive with Intel's Crappy Lake, that isn't really innovative or earth shattering.
Getting fat and not improving the core business, getting defocused and making stupid decisions into other areas it has no business being in, and accomplishing nothing in the process....The biggest accomplishment at Intel is probably from Intel HR: a successful implementation of "URM"....Unfortunately, URM does not drive profits.
