Thread regarding Sears layoffs

Customers now keep the hangers, when we used to collect them to send them back to the distribution center.

It sounds pretty benign but there's a new policy in place for softlines associates to leave hangers on all apparel that use them. Normally, stores collect them to send to CRC (central return center). At the CRC, they are reused for apparel freight.

Is there something bigger behind this? As in, we don't need any more hangers because we aren't going to be around in a few months? Why bother shipping hangers back to a distribution center?

I could be wrong, but you really have to analyze any new program, initiative, policy, etc. that the company puts out. Usually, signs point to a future without Sears or Kmart.

Letting customers have the hangers helps with the speed of the checkout. Someone figured out that if you can save 20-30 seconds not taking the hangers off then you can check out faster. Also, it cost money to sent the hangers back so it actually makes sense to give the customers the hangers. Hangers cost around 2 cents or less to buy in quantity.

It appears that this person is looking at it because it's a new policy. I think that's smart to do especially in a failing company.

We take the hangers at my Sears and if that changed, it would mean something.

You're probably reading too much into it. Some retailers will ask if you want the hangers and some just automatically take them off at the register. The only hangers that are really kept are if they have the company logo or have a design that's slightly different from other hangers.

I have been with Sears for over 18 years and we always give the customer hangers, and a matter of fact if they want more we are happy to give them to the customers.

Kmart has been doing this for years. The things that happen, happen first at Kmart and then Sears. Coming to a store near you--- no more commission, no more salary. Only hourly employees with no benefits and 32-35 hours max. Get ready.

All i was trying to say is that Kmart has been doing this for year. YES I KNOW FULL WELL the company is going down the drain, i mean really, how can any of us forget when people like you seem to LOVE to remind us DAILY of what we all already know! In response to faster checkouts, I was a front end lead until my position was eliminated in January and I can tell you that there are cashiers who just don't check people out quickly. I know the registers are a problem and yes they are slow, but some people don't seem to understand how to have a conversation and ring at the same time, or how to scan an item, deactivate it and bag it. Cashiering is not rocket science, some people could certainly use some help on moving their a-- out!

I was told that the Sears hanger recycling program was a farce and that the collected hangers were just being sent to a landfill. Can somebody confirm if this was true?

I worked at Sears about 15 years ago, and we were always told to absolutely never remove hangers unless the customer specifically asked us to.

It is probably cheaper for the company to not collect them, since they have to retrieve the hangers, sort them, and get them back into the production line. The hangers are so cheap to produce, that it is the low cost option. They don't concern themselves about the hangers ending up in landfills The same goes to shipping containers that overseas shippers use. They are far more expensive to ship back in a lot of cases, that they just buy new, and collect the old ones at the ports.

@zkl; Hah, fast checkout. Think of all the time that will be saved from leaving hangers on the clothing! It'll totally offset the (1) SYWR nagging (they almost never use the phone number input themselves), (2) Sears card nagging, (3) smart plan nagging (where applicable), (4) receipt method nagging, and so on. That all doesn't take into account all the register lag and the tendency for crashes to occur.

I don't think that person was saying "all Is fine". I'm sure everyone knows sears is dying especially if you work there. However, every single small policy change doesn't necessarily stem directly from the company preparing for bankruptcy.

Stop reading into stuff. Kmart has been giving hangers away for years (we are not even allowed to ask if the customer wants he hanget, just give it to them unless they say otherwise) Right now Kmart is really pushing fast checkout, which includes not removing hangers to get people through the line. Things always seem to start at Kmart and then move on to sears. It doesn't mean anything

I have to agree with you about that! It looks like the AP (Asset Protection) people being removed from the stores is another sign that SHLD may not be around much longer. Apparently they'd rather have the stuff (some of it at least 10 years old!) leave the store via the "five finger discount" and collect the insurance on that merchandise that has been stolen than to try to sell it!!
