Thread regarding Qualcomm Inc. layoffs

Qualcomm needs a fresh round of layoffs.

We are a disorganized mess with meetings about why there are so many meetings.

There's at 3 to 5 people to do a single job, each in a different location, each thinking they are the only person doing the job.

There are politics on top of the politics.

But the company executives don't care about efficiency - it's always been throw money at the problem for fear of stepping on somebodies toes. Locations like RTP are a disaster and the model of an organization who not only doesn't pull its weight, it pulls everybody else down with it.

Many execs should have been fired a long time ago. How many times can they fudge the numbers to look like the apps processor is the best thing out there, while they underplay market benchmarking and say "they just didn't optimize it for us?"

How many times can that group say "everything is fine" until its obvious that it isn't and a tapeout gets missed or a major bug is in a product?

Remember the "Fabric" that was going to make bus design so much better? How about that crappy design process (what was it called) they imposed on everyone else so they, and they alone, could control the design flow of the company. Dollars wasted, lives lost.

Get rid of that entire group to start with and send them packing back to IBM, where most of them came from.

Read your CEO's citi conference transcript. I'll translate it for you: the server effort is no where close to making money.

No one should wish for layoffs.

However, Qcom does operate inefficiently. I found that whatever takes a few weeks in my old company takes months and months here. Deadlines go by and it's not a big deal. At my old company, there was a lot of yelling, but everyone came together as a team to get things done fast. Here, everyone is focused more on how not to get your code changes in by making petty comments and making sure you follow the process. In general, people don't want to get work done here. My site has prohibited WFH, but staff+ still do so. There's this one woman in my site who has a doctor's appointment once a week. If it's not for her, it's for her pet cat. On the other hand, in my old company some people used to commute 60+ miles everyday. People don't want to get work done here.

The inefficiency in which Qcom operates is reflected in QCT's low profit margins.

Wonder how companies accumulate so much unwanted baggage in the form of people.

No employee who is fired at least thanks the company for the opportunity it has given for many years .

Please lay me off and put me out of my misery. I am waiting for my package. My bags are packed and I'm ready to go.

RTP apologists may be able to con Q execs, but it will be harder to con the customer.

You're ALREADY overpromising 50 cores when the real number is 48. These aren't good cores either. They are sh!tty Hydra derivatives which are too big and power inefficient vs off the shelf ARM.

It's no wonder QCT dumped RTP for ARM.

When cloud service providers compare solutions from AMD and Intel the choice will be clear. Huge negative ROI is coming.

I can assure you that AMD and Intel aren't worried. They're laughing.

Probably is true about the execution of RTP however they have many issues to fix, they debug for ever, don't have a clear idea of the failures neither how to minimize them, their response is super slow, too many people and only few execute. Politics are also all over. RTP needs a restructure ASAP and layoff all unproductive and redundant engineers.

Let's set the record straight because OP doesn't know what he's talking about:

1) there would be no Snapdragon if it weren't for RTP

2) they did the first mobile process on the market by 1.5 years and sunk TI, NVDIA, and the ARM camp

3) numerous awards for both Scorpion & Krait processors

4) they were doing high speed designs when we in SD were doing low performance ARM 11 MSM7500

5) have developed a kick a-- ARM server processor with 50 cores, being sampled to multiple OEM's

  • performance and power numbers not released publicly to enable intel G2

OP, go look inside you own team and keep your politics to yourself!

Entire teams in BDC could be replaced by a single engineer in SD

maybe the numbers were not given so as to not tip the hand to intel. i can assure you the numbers are excellent. all this talk sounds like its coming from sour grapes KK. why don't you get your own house in order you back stabber. you have multiple groups doing the same thing and tons of infighting

Check out the hot chips talk for the RTP Centriq server chip. Everyone there saw what a total joke of a processor this is. The Q and A was hilarious 😂.

The words out of the presenter's mouth were 'no performance or power' numbers.

Wonder why? 😂

Can't agree more. Since Dr. Jha left, QC has not been moving ahead of the game. No vision, poor execution, big mess...led by SM.. Having SM as the QCT head is the beginning of the downhill path.

Then he got promoted to be CEO.. Sigh!

RTP's 15 year old IBM methodology is total amateur hour.

Can't wait to see the server benchmarks. You'll see how pathetic this team is.

RTP is a disaster.

The OP is ON POINT!

They can't even keep up with ARM designs let alone Apple. Their server program is a total joke. You'd think that after krait and hydra the execs would just dump the whole site. Poor leadership at the Q

Apple... how many Q engineers can they hire? I heard they are expanding silicon efforts and getting into cellular modem? It's a better choice than this sinking ship called Q

What a f*cking mess. We should start by getting rid of all of the SVPs and most of the VPs. They are overpaid, lazy and useless. They screwed up the company so badly. Q is a shadow of itself from just a few years back. Look at all the recent VP and SVP promotions last couple of years. Really??? This company deserved better. What a bunch of pathetic losers. Q is done. It will be a different company going forward. Brace for rough times ahead with lots of uncertainty and layoffs

Goodbye Q

Too late. Steve Jobs used to say, "Apple is a ship with a hole in the bottom and my job is to point it in the right direction." QCOM management has no clue which direction to go and they deny there is a hole...
