Thread regarding Humana Inc. layoffs

Early Retirment and Layoffs

Humana will be offering early retirement. The early retirement will not be enough to offset the savings required to be met by RIF. They will be laying off company-wide. It's going to be really substantial. Coming in the next 60 days.

Hoping I don't sound discriminating, I am an older nurse (now) that left a secure position to come to Humana. To throw me out on the street would be devastating. I cannot any longer go and run around hospital floors since I would not be hired. My experiences have moved to another route. I am active, healthy and alert but I also have grey hair. Hospitals like to hire the young and fresh out of college due to low starting rate of pay. I came to Humana under the pretense that they were seeking nurses with years of experience in various settings. This is a very vital component to the HAH program. Sometimes the bottom line is due to other causes, not exactly your front line workers yet those are where they always look to make the cuts.

They might well have asked for volunteers to quit if that's all they are offering. 2 wks for every year of employment up to 1 year. Seems like this deal isn't going to help lessen the blow of the upcoming layoffs

Same as the layoff package? Oh my goodness. Wow, that's awful.

It's the same package as the layoff

Early retirement offer is a joke. Unless you have been working for 20 years or more, it is not feasible, especially if you aren't eligible for Medicare in the near future. It is not the kind of retirement package that other companies offer.

In the sense that whether Humana knows who is posting here, this site is anonymous.

It's just a virtual version of the water cooler.

The suggestion for voluntary layoffs is a great idea one. I'm not sure they ever clarified why they don't consider it feasible.

Please...early retirement has EVERYTHING to do with taxes and the end of the tax year, it is offered now, so you can have 60 days notice, and not have certain tax consequences next year

I disagree with the OP posting, the tone, the accuracy, etc...but don't see why the OP should be fired, lots of crap is posted on here, some things incite others, some don't, but fired for saying there are going to be layoffs and early retirement? Why is that any different than any of the other posts or threads? Are you calling to fire the one on the thread who insulted all he readers by saying they take everything as gospel or someone was faking a business background? Or calling for he firing of the person who posted things under someone else's name? This isn't an anonymous site, it is attached to your Google account, but given we have some privacy as to who we are and our roles, I am confused as to what I missed ..... people know, if they are at the "level" of early retirement is going to be offered, no names were mentioned, you get the email or you don't, you decide to do it or not....why should the OP be fired? What horrific ethical thing did they violate? All semantics aside, I do like the idea of volunteering for layoff status, hopefully, someone will email their coach and cc their com to get that ball rolling

Why should the OP be fired for giving us the facts. It would appear the only erroneous info given was that early retirement is annual for tax purposes. Is it incorrect that layoffs will be substantial or that layoffs will occur across the board?

The early retirement option has nothing to do with their pay. It’s age 55+ and those who have a certain amount of years with Humana. I can’t remember how many years minimum to qualify.

There's a wide range of salAries, based on degrees and experience...you and your coworker may have the same degree, but experience may be the tipping point

I don't think it caused any fear that wasn't already there. We already knew the next layoff was scheduled for November. 💯informed us of this weeks ago. Not to mention we all expect Q4 layoffs.

The question is, why didn't they start with early retirement offers in the 1st or 2nd rounds. Also should have offered voluntary layoffs last round. That would have minimized layoffs of those wanting to remain. I would much rather be working with peers who want to be here than those who hate Humana.

Are these voluntary early retirement offers across the board or just in positions already heavily hit? Are they just in Humana at Home or company wide?

It's not really true that new hires make less. I actually makes less than a co-worker who has been here 2 years less than me. We have the same degree as a matter of fact.

They will not be fired for posting here.

And honestly, after 2017's events, many are already freaked out. That's why so many are even visiting this site at all.

Early retirement can be a favorable offer for certain people, especially those that are close to retirement anyways. It allows the company to re-evalute the need to replace the position lost by the retirement. Some will get replaced; others won't depending on need. Typically in some positions, the starting salary of the replaced person is generally lower so that also saves cost. By doing it now, all of the severance costs can be accrued to the 2017 budget and reduce budget impacts going forward. Whoever posted the information about this initiative rather than let the communication come out formally, should be fired. It caused a lot of fear and inaccurate information here and they had no right to do it. Almost every comment or speculation on here is wrong and only served to freak people out.

Other companies have offered voluntary layoff options and managed to make it work.

A number of people on my phc team would volunteer. There is often not enough time in the day outside of work hours for a serious job hunt, and 60 day notice with early release would be a good opportunity.

For many, it is better to dive into the job hunt that to ride the sinking ship of job insecurity. Many are miserable with the present conditions. It would be beneficial for those who want to stay as well.

So yah, the early retirement offers are not routine based on tax purposes. Not sure what help early retirement is though because those offers generally involve the same offers as severance. Except now they won't be sued for agism during the layoff. Why don't they offer volunteer layoffs? We are down to the best PHCs essentially. It's not as though they would lose the best employees through voluntary layoffs, but they would lose those who don't really want to be here. Leave those who are fighting to stay.

No need for RS.... that would lead me wonder if the small number of phc's left after next layoffs would be doing enrollments in order to assign members to licensed hcm's.

Whatever ends up happening, it is clear the PHC role is going to change. Maybe that is why the topic is so rushed and the answer is so vague when asked about at meetings.

An email went out the PHC will now doing be the MDAT...layoffs in November match up with he time frame for the changes and shifts that are happening, early retirement options are being sent out for those that have higher salaries, need positions vacated, or have too much benefits accumulated to pay out.

Thank you for the info. Do they know who's going to be doing the enrollements or are they going to just not enroll anyone ? Not a good sign.

The emails will go out Monday to inform early retirement option. Coaches and managers will have convos with those that received.

There is another layoff coming in November. I don’t know who is going to specifically be impacted (yet).

RSs will soon no longer complete enrollments.

Pretends to have a business degree? Really? Swallow the nonsense like gospel? Guess you're in your glass house throwing stones you shouldn't be, insulting everyone on the threads intelligence and judging someone's degrees, knowledge or education from a few words they posted? Really? Maybe you should volunteer for a layoff, because your judgement and negativity and insulting attitude really makes me question, in the few words you posted, what you're pretending to be.

So, below poster, the wording of the email is different than anything you have seen previous years? It seems some are saying that this is not news, others seems to have the impression that this is significantly different from business as usual.

I would hesitate to believe the majority of those who visit this site swallow any of this like it's gospel.

Most of us, I would bet, already see the writing on the wall but come here to learn what others have heard, taking some "information" with a healthy dose of skepticism along the way, this being an anonymous site and all.

I always get a kick out of people here who go on and on about what's happening like they are in the know. Like about tax purposes and routine early retirements. It is obvious who has not seen the email. It's obvious who pretends to have business degrees or political knowledge. It's even funnier to see all who swallow the nonsense like it's gospel.

If HR is reading this and there is another layoff coming soon, please find a way to take volunteers as it isn't fair to those who want to stay when others are praying to be chosen!!! I need to be able to volunteer!

I agree, for humana to bring someone in, with more experience or experience in where they want to go, and someone in a higher up position is not as well versed as someone else, they offer early retirement, instead of layoff, to keep the budget line open, it is done in government and businesses all the time. With the direction humana wants to go, they may have found better fit people than who they have in place, so they may be offered the option of early retirement to get the new people in

Yes, to certain people, it is offered related to taxes and the tax year, and options. Many senior people take the opportunity to take options and move on to the next place, that's why many vps stay for 5 years or so...there is nothing mind blowing about early retirement, that's business norm, nothing has changed from a mo the ago, despite the OPs comments, we know there is going to be change and realignment, we were told there were going to be more layoffs...the "2 months" quoted is not new news, we were all told that nothing was guaranteed and there could be layoffs this year....this year ends in 3 months

So, below poster, the email about early retirement can be described as "standard end of year offerings?" This is offered every year?

by
| | Reply
Post ID: @1lot+Pn5Or1I

It is standard end of year offerings, and Humana is not looking to be acquired, they are looking to acquire, look for Humana to buy another company in the next year to further their goals...if the pillars they're focusing on are pharmacy, behavioral health and home services, those are the safest places to be aligned with so you can move forward...update your talent center, do what you can, but licensed people who can provide reimbursement for services and those that can support the pillars are a bit better situated than others

Humana is making plenty of money. We are just the pawns being sacrificed to make the bottom line look better. Working at HAH used to be a good thing, now we are just part of the machine. A fortune 500 company who don't care what your security needs are. They will sell you on an extra couple of days and WAH but they don't care. This is all about the Business side, the view from Wall St. Your needs don't matter. I don't see the sky falling in but if you get a chance of another job, take it.

Humana made a fortune last year. The area around the ACA was not profitable. I think Humana is downsizing so they can be acquired.

Post ID: @1tqm+Pn5Or1I

It sure sounds like the OP has new info. And yeah, the Obama care thing is directly related to company wide layoffs so discussion of It is pertinent. The company is in financial trouble due to reduced enrollments resulting from high premium costs and too much overhead. Why do you think they were open to acquisition? Why do you think the top brass cashed in their stock? The failure of the ACA has been written on the wall since early 2016. Insurance companies have had to greatly increase premiums to offset the deficits created. It's not a safe time to be in the health insurance industry.

Early retirement packages are a really big deal. It is definitely the sign of strategic weakness. Just ask someone for a copy of the email. Came out this morning from the Chief HR. There is no mistaking the message. Early retirement is not going to do crap for the problems Humana has. Even if they exceed their expected number in early retirement it will only reduce the number of people RIFed. You can be pretty sure that a lot of people will be unemployed.

Enough with the Obamacare debate. Nobody is changing anyone else's mind and most of us are here for layoff information. I want to know how many others have heard this.

I'm inclined to believe it is true, based on the news article about layoffs continuing through 2018, and the way they made it clear in MF's town hall, saying they would try to minimize it, but not denying there was more to come.
