Thread regarding Chevron Corp. layoffs

Why wouldn't Chevron rehire laid off Chevron employees?

My manager's manager assured me that when business picked back up that I would be called back. Maybe they lied. Does everyone really believe that laid off employees were poor performers? And why would someone from another company want to leave to come work for Chevron?

Some people prefer smaller companies. I was laid off and was very passionate and dedicated about my work. I worked many hours outside of regular hours. It's frustrating to have earned three college degrees, and give my devotion to the company only to be told I am not worth anything. It doesn't make sense that my career should be over. It's emotionally challenging, because I haven't secured other employment yet.

Not my post, I just bumping @PlTuZ6P-6kii as it deserves a separate thread

They hire laid off, EOI'd, and retirees periodically as contractors. Now, they may not go to the bottom of the barrel if that's the issue. It's a select few, not like a notice is sent out to everybody. If all you can do is work at the burger doodle or Christmas tree stand that's all you're gonna get. Some people were selected to be let go for reasons other than cutting costs, or in addition to. Those likely won't be back.

Getting laid off at Chevron is 99.9% a one-way ticket. So don’t hold out any expectations to return, no matter what they told you prior to you leaving. Those were false words.

My father worked for Chevron for 40 years, I worked for 20 and my wife is worked for 21. I have never had a position with more support and to be honest HR really had their stuff together. It is constantly listed amongst the best companies in the US to work for. but I know at least five or six HR people who are fantastic.

You are right, @famf. Chevron does have a rotten HR system that is not based on merit, but on a political correctness, an affirmative action mentality and a disproportionate gender and social issue agenda.

Backstabbing those who are trying to get back in is unusual. Not a good team culture with you lot.

I've not seen anything like this regarding other energy companies. Chevron obviously has a rotten HR system not based on merit, but on backstabbing and circling the wagons to protect "in club."

The low level lifers who poke fun at those who were laid off, tells the state of Chevron's organization.

I am in the same position as you and have a new job that I love, which pays more. However, Chevron was one of the best places that I have ever worked and my years of experience there, highlighted on my resume, is the main reason that I have the job that I do today. Sure, there are some hard times that we went through. Been through many nail-biting layoffs and excruciating mergers. You guys need to learn that this is just part of the game. The strong will survive. Hang in there and good luck!

Leaving Chevron after many years was the best decision I have made in my life! It didn't take long at all to find another job and at first had to take a small pay cut but now after 3 years I am back at the same pay and am much happier and in a great working environment. Working at Chevron was the best of times and the worst of times -chin up and keep looking for another job!

7gsj, No one is claiming what you just posted; that a company has a massive layoff then immediately rehires exactly 35% of the exact same people laid off, or 50% or anything else. That's not what "rehire rate" is.

But keep adding details and disclaimers and eventually you may be able to construct a truthful comment.

@7ndu, If Chevron is not hiring right now, that makes the current rehire rate 0%. But taking a 3-year rolling average, the rehire rate has been around 2%. The 35% rate the previous dumb--s is trying to pass off is not real. No company, including Chevron hires back over 1/3 of the workforce it recently dismissed. Never.

HR is not divulging information on this site. No one claimed that they were. Chevron employees with over 40 years experience are. And I can assure you that the re-hire rate is not 1%, 2% 3% , 10%, or whatever the disgruntled laid-off worker claimed below. it's much higher than that, and closer to the 35%.

Believe what you want. Who cares? They're not hiring now. You're not doing anyone here any good by posting lies and false information, though.

HR doesn't know their rear ends from a hole in the ground so son't believe a word anyone spouts about "internal HR stats". They certainly won't divulge that info on this site.

A 35% rehire rate, even as a contractor, seems pretty high. From this, it appears that Chevron laid off too many valuable professional employees in their panic haste to cut costs. Another example of short sighted poor management decision.

@6beo, Forget about Internal stats. The official record is kept by HR. The rehire rate is around 2%.

This is nonsense. The re-hire rate is 35% going by internal stats.

@6wec, Everyone knows you stepped in sh!t when you chose to say 50%. The fact is as I stated. Twenty years of HR stats show the rehire rate is closer to 2%.

About half, you say @5eua? Well, I actually have Chevron’s stats from HR for the last 20 years. It’s closer to 2% that are rehired. Get your facts straight.

Read your separation agreement. Don't be spoon fed by HR BPs or the manager who targeted you. You may come back as a short term contractor, but those are not desirable positions and have zero benefits.

3dbp, About half of my laid off or EOI co-workers over the years were hired back either direct or as contractors. That's hardly one in a hundred.

But do believe whatever you want, even if it's false, like you apparently do. Karma will certainly come your way.

I was laid off from Chevron, (took the package) and was re-hired as a contractor for higher pay, just not the same benefits. I'm as happy as a clam with my work situation and know quite a few others who did exactly the same thing over the years. My first hand experience seems to negate some of the ill-informed comments on this thread.

Chevron has grown through mergers of Texeco and Unical, not by successful business. They will not hire you back if you took a package. Your boss lied to you. The good old boy and gal network of friends and relatives run the company. Don't even think about coming back unless you marry into the gang.

Chevron is currently taking and laying off high paid employees and replacing them with college grads. It cheaper, but look at the fatalities, divestitures and hits they are taking. Move on to greener pastures, your manager was just trying to make the blow easier for him and you.

Don't listen to the comments above, good people were laid off. It was very bias and bullsh@T, I looked for a little while and found another job. Just keep applying for jobs you will find one. I went in the box and outside of the box. Network on linkin, indeed etc..... I have gotten more reply's off of these 2 sites. Most of the people commenting above are full of S@@T. Karma is something else, I am in agreement why would you want to work for a company commenting like the ones above. I have actually make alot more than what I made a chevron. Yes, it messes with your head, but you will find that great job and then it will be over. I would not consider going back to a bunch of nonprofessional, backstabbing and illiterate people. They have had fatalities, projects over ran, CEO out and the most amusing thing is replacing our CEO with one of the other koolaid drinkers. Nothing is going to change. I have 3 degrees too, just promote them. I am also going back to school to get my master on Chevron.... I want to thank Chevron for letting me go, now I don't have to deal with crap. I did not see how bad it has really been working there. You know when they have to sell assets to pay dividend there is something wrong.

Purused the layoff board, and there is something very 'off' about Chevron's board. It sounds like the OP was in a good job fit and probably quite specialized. Chevron is losing more than just talent now.

Too much possible animosity.

Chevron didn't lay you off because there wasn't enough work/revenue to pay you, they laid you off because of your performance compared to your peers.

You either did slob enough knobs or you slobbed the wrong knobs, either way it was considered performance based. (from their perspective)

Chevron isn't done laying people off. I work in S.J.V.B.U and we are facing another R.O.M. Why would they call you back, when they could just fill those positions with the current workforce. The storm isn't over yet boys.
