Thread regarding Nike Inc. layoffs

Why we can't prove ageism

From the June layoff the average age was 44. The median age was also 44. Breaking the ages down into 10 year brackets (20-30, 31-40, etc.) showed a perfect curve with the tallest point being the average/median. It's quite clear that there were quotas to fill across the age spectrum. Nike had to sacrifice a number of young people to get rid of us older employees.

Exactly what @QcTQipc-1adh said. If Nike was willing to get rid of its best employees to save a few bucks on their salary and replace them with cheaper greenhorns, getting rid of a few younger people just to insure there are no grounds for age-related lawsuits is par for the course. This only goes to show that nobody is safe at Nike, not the long-term employees with higher salaries nor the new hires who can be sacrificed at any moment at the altar of shareholder satisfaction.

This will be unpopular opinion, i know that, but i think older employees who have been with the company for more than twenty years should not be protected when it comes to layoffs.

Majority of them has been here for so long that they have lost all of their drive but are still paid much more than the rest of us. this is not personal, i'm not advocating to lay them off, just saying if they are it's not ageism. there are actual reasons behind it.

Thoughts?

Directors who have no one reporting to them or SR Directors who do not contribute or add any value. Someone asked when was the last time you saw someone 55 or older get hired? We have not seen that happen but see the same type of people being hired over and over and a few years later leave because they thought they would be VP.

There is ageism at Nike no doubt.

Nike has created positions for full time employment for jobs that can be done in about 10 hours a week. This is why people are being let go. There is no way in hell, Concept Director is a full-time job and it pays more than $100,000 a year. Think about it? Color Designers when there was only one per category were responsible with their marketing counterparts to come up with concepts and THEY weren't even that busy, but now Nike needs to have a Color Design 1, CD2, Sr color designer, design manager, design director, production artist and a CONCEPT DIRECTOR!! That's ridiculous!!! It's great that Nike is able to employ so many people, but keep those that are actually contributing and get rid of the do-nothings.

You asked when was the last time you saw somebody over 55 or 60 get hired at Nike?

I was offered a job at Nike several years ago when I was almost 63 years old. I decided to turn it down and retire instead.

Not in a long time, I think the hiring average age is mid-20s.

It will be interesting to see what are the ages of the people who get hired to fill open positions.
