Thread regarding Sears layoffs

What kind of work environment is this?

I'm a supervisor, however, between two of my crew members and the store manager I might as well not be. I am always being challenged by these particular crew members whenever I give them a directive. One of them will literally do something I told them not to do just to spite me. The other day, I told one of them to save a few boxes, yet he broke them down right in front of me as if to say that he will get away with it because the store manager won't care if it becomes an issue.

When they are not being insubordinate, they try to push me around. When I try to put them in their place, politely yet firmly, they take it personal and resort to yelling and being extremely argumentative.

I am always polite and respectful with everyone including the problem associates. unfortunately the store manager seems to favor two of these associates; me, not so much. Literally, I cannot confront these associates about their behavior or work performance without causing a big argument, even if it is something minor.

I feel like I don't have the support of the store manager at all. I genuinely feel that I would get in trouble for writing them up or "laying down the law", even though I'm within my rights to do so. I can't even discuss with the store manager the problems I'm having without being curtly cut off. She very clearly favors them over me. She made it clear that she "didn't want to lose anyone" the latest time I put my foot down for the latest round of insubordination and got called to her office for it. Really? You are okay with insubordination?

There is one ASM that I trust and share my concerns with but it is not fair to bother her with the problems I am having with my people as she has too much on her plate as it is. I've called 88Sears but nothing seemed to happen with that. I'm not comfortable telling the district manager because I don't know if they will turn right around and tell her.

So, basically, I'm stuck with two specific associates that is making my work life unbearable with a store manager that not only is enabling these problem associates, but seems to have an agenda against me for whatever reason. I hate coming to work and have anxiety issues because of it.

A toxic work environment if their ever was one. It’s unfortunate that you can’t assert your authority or be able to do your job effectively. All you can do is persevere and continue your search for a better and more rewarding job.

I was going to suggest documenting everything so if you do choose to complain to the DM, and he or she still sides with the SM, then you can show your documentation of what is going on to the next person over the DM.

So I am the "supervisor guy" that wrote this last night. The problem is that even though I have the authority to write up for insubordination and other issues, it has to go through the store manager. The store manager has the final say in what happens after I submit the form. Looking back on my previous experiences in trying to get these problem associates to conform or be let go, it will go nowhere with the store manager and in fact I may get in trouble for basically saying "enough of enough". She is very aware of their behavior but will not do anything.

I've been advised by HR that by taking them off the schedule could be construed as an act of retaliation. However, I have reduced their hours. However, like everything else, the store manager has the final say in the schedule and asked me why I gave her "golden egg" associates so few hours and promptly bumped them up.

I'd have to be a fool to not realize that I'm being pushed out. I'm not sure why since I have a good work ethic and have been a tremendous contributor to the store in improving processes and consistency, which has helped the bottom line. I have to admit that I am not the only one being unfairly "singled out" by her, there are other associates and managers in the store who she holds favorable/unfavorable views for no concrete reason. That's a.question I cannot answer and I won't really care when March rolls around next year (2018) when I am planning to leave.

Thanks for your support.

Very hard to deal if SM don't support you. Supervisor positions were created to eliminate ASM so you basically have the authority to write up and get rid of associates. Our Kmart is basically nothing but youngins who have everything handed to them from SM.Favoritism runs rampant..Good luck to you...

If you don't have the support of your SM, you're in a tough spot unless she's leaving soon. In my store, the DM just rubber stamps the SM regardless and 88Sears calls in to get the SMs take on everything so the shifty SM prevails & he's done some unethical stuff.

Consider AOS level for resolution or better yet, just start looking for a new job. Company is going to close guaranteed.

I was going to suggest contacting the DM. Your in a tough one OP, but you just got to do something or just bounce and leave. Thats why write ups are for. If they don't listen you write them up. S---s that your SM is useless and bias. You either have to make a move or just let it go as i said OP you can cut their hours and maybe higher someone else as previous poster mentioned?

I would say have a serious talk with the SM if not tell him/her your going to leave. You should be looking around if things won't get fixed and look for something else.

Can you cut their hours back? If not at least schedule them when they are not together. You may deal with them better when they don't feed off each other and form an alliance. Otherwise just document. List the tasks that were given to each and when stuff doesn't get done just report the facts to the store manager. Write down your observations, use specifics, dates, times quotes of what employees say etc.
