The wireless network that strives to connect people to help them do more, Verizon is known for its fast-paced work environment, great opportunities for advancement, and—of course— exceptional pay and benefits.

One employee sums it up by saying, “great management, great benefits, compensation is swell.”

Even so, another points out that the company culture isn’t for everyone. “You must be self-sufficient, have drive, and be motivated to work hard every day.” But for those who thrive in these environments?

Put simply: “The pay and benefits are the best in the industry.”

""...Its no longer growing and cuts have to be made before its too late."

People still use phones -- right?"

Yes, people still use phones, but that doesn't mean the market is growing or that there are still the same profits to be made. The market is saturated (most adults who see a need for a cell phone already have one) and there is now lots of low price competition. People still "buy things" but that doesn't mean the Amazon and others haven't devastated a lot of retail stores.

“@1skd: I don't think a single person on this site would argue that VZ pays well, and has great benefits. What I do think is that each and every VZ employee has no idea if they will be working next week, or working on their unemployment benefits.”

Not so, I will be working next week and every week at least until August 2019. Unless the Special EISP comes around for me, that would make it sooner. As a matter of fact everyone in my work group is in the same circumstance.

The problem is corporate greed -- after all, those five top executives really need that $233,000,000.00, don't they? In the meantime they cut more and more people who take care of customers, causing them to lose more business, 'justifying' the layoffs of even more people, causing them to lose more business, and... you get the picture. Pretty soon they're selling off chunks of the business and circling the drain.

Successful companies grow -- they don't downsize. That basic logic.

There are many 'old' companies that have stayed reverent in their industries that have changed to meet the new direction of the company without alienating the 'older' work force the way VZ has. It just points to the lack of management skills that has invaded the company with the poor management decisions that have added up to the poorly operated company it has morphed in to.

Like all companies you have employees who've had good experiences & some who have bad ones as well. It's a matter of perspective & what that employee is looking for in a company, not all employees fit at the company they work for so while VZ may not be the best company for some it may be for others. Employees who've worked for the company 10 years or more have a more jaded opinion of VZ because they were here during the "glory days" when things were plentiful but given the new direction of the company they tend to compare how things were to how they are now. Change is inevitable & VZ has resisted drastic change for so long that now it's unavoidable "if they want to stay afloat" this is not just our industry but all industries. VZ provides each & every employee the tools to better themselves & remain relevant not just within the company but outside as well - whether an employees capitalized on those opportunities is their choice. Jobs will come & go but a career will essentially be forever, Rodney Dangerfield said it best in the movie Back to School "You gotta look out for #1 without stepping in #2" - Your life, your career is your responsibility!

Same here - 25 years with Verizon Wireless IT (starting out as Cellular One). About 4 months before I got laid off, I was moved to another department (and my former position was filled by a much younger College Student.) I was also fed the BS about really being needed when in fact the new department already had too many people. I am certain they did this moving-around to make the RIF numbers look better....

I look at the other telecom boards here and see the same thing about possible layoffs. Its just the current state of the sector. Its no longer growing and cuts have to be made before its too late.

"One employee sums it up by saying, “great management, great benefits, compensation is swell.”"

And a great many layoffs.

Our company was bought. I was the go-to guy in our department -- with 35 years experience, I got all the odd stuff nobody else could figure out and made it work. We kept getting the razmataz about how "valuable" we were to Verizon. After about a year we were finally assigned to a group in Verizon. Once again we got all the happy horse manure about how we were a valuable addition to the team. One on one meetings were scheduled a few times and cancelled. Then they laid us off -- without having a clue about what we could do (they never talked to us). So excuse me if I don't buy the crap about Verizon being such a great company.

I've worked for this company for 15yrs, thg his is not true! I make less money every year for doing more. This year I will sell 50% more than last year and even with my raise I will make less than last year. The company plays with quotas all the time, make quotas unattainable and they dont have to pay us. I've sold more year over year and I'm pacing to make 11,000 less this year if quotas stay so high. If more than 60% of your district's not even coming close to quota I think there is a problem!

Wow. Thanks for the public service announcement Lowell.

Sure Verizon pays well. I have done very well thanks to Verizon. But at what cost? You sell your soul to Satan working for Verizon. And it will $uck the life from you too.

I Lived the VZ life for 20 years before I got Rif'd when others less qualified and paid less in the department were passed by. Sounds like a great place to work...NOT!

My entire worksite must not be cut out for it then because everyone I talk to hates it and is either hoping to get rifed or looking for other work. Not one person I have talked to likes it there.
