Thread regarding Dell Inc. layoffs

Managers only managing up

Many managers, or wannabe managers are taught to manage up. I have one, not at MSD, that refuses to manage his own team. However, he manages the teams interaction with who we report to extremely well. As the next level only cares about what they receive they are very happy with him and refuse to even entertain that this person needs to change. When a few of us brought it up as a problem the complaint was turned around on us and repeated back that what he was hearing was that 'we' had a problem with our manager, not that the manager was not doing his job. The problem became one of addressing how 'we' could change and improve our interactions with this particular manager, rather than how this manager could change/improve.

and we all are expected to sell ourselves and our work at senior level. Like hey I helped design this process, earn this money, this is my value. Don't they have big data and their managers to ask who contributed? Exec should be a lot smarter than normal manager, it's baffling how ancient monarchy still applies in company hierarchy. Promote stupid put smart to work.

The difference between managers and engineers is that managers are great at playing politics to make themselves look good in their managers eyes, while most engineers ( myself included) abhor the political games, and most can't even stand their managers. I spent 15 years with Dell before moving on to a start up, and in the entire time I worked for Dell I only had one manager that I had any respect for. I collected my paycheck, and did my job and ignored the politics while I was with Dell, and skipped every meeting with management that I could get away with. I don't miss the Dell environment one bit, however, I also found much of the same thing going on at start ups, since many are foolish enough to hire the discarded management from Dell and EMC, and after 3 years with a start up I retired from the industry and am now a happy person.

Don't understand why do we need managers, what are they managing? Not us obviously. If VPs and Directors need caretakers, they should hire extra executive assistant, not managers. Like who needs a manager whom you cannot consult in anything work related except politics, so redundant. This org design is really really outdated. We are not all factory workers we don't need 4 layers of foremen managing each. If we need help in work efficiency and training we have consultants and analyst. Managers are overpaid babysitter it seems?

Sorry to burst your bubble but...

Do you really think your manager is there to help you and your colleagues?

If so, ask yourself another question: do you really think HR's mission is to help employees?

If you answered yes to any one of those questions, then you need a reality check, especially in a large company like Dell. Whoever in power, from the lowest to highest below M.D. will do everything to look good in his superior's eyes. The rest really does not matter much to them. And any manager who does not play that game ( or does not play it well enough ) is headed for the exit.

This is true for any large company.
