When you mine those bankruptcy documents, you can unearth absolute treasures that trash the PR nonsense that we've had to endure for years under the Great Transformation.

Shop Your Way Rewards is a shocking failure.

The company admits as of today, there are 144,000,000 customers enrolled in SYWR. Only 29 million of those accounts bought ANYTHING at Kmart or Sears in the last year.

But worse, as of today, there were only 251 million Shop Your Way points outstanding. What does that equal in dollars? Just $251,000.

1,000 points=$1 so 251,000,000 / 1,000 = $251,000

That's quite a transformation alright.

Huh? That's completely wrong. It takes 1000 points to be worth a dollar - each point is worth $0.001 (a tenth of one cent). And you earn points at 1% back normally (though there are many ways to get more points)... spend $100 out of pocket, get $1 worth of points back, which is 1000 points; spend $1 out of pocket, get 10 points back, which is $0.01.

And I would say that at least a quarter of those 29 million that bought something have multiple accounts. We have some people that come in two, three times a day using a different email or phone number so they can use their surprise points or points they won playing games. Most of them never actually buy anything they just get enough to get it free with points. And for a while if someone returned something and they had used points to purchase all or part of the item they were give cash back. How crazy is that? Why give cash back when someone bought a $20 items with $10 in points.

So we give them back their $20 in cash or a credit to their card. I dont think that happens anymore but it was happening for over a year.

We have reported a few to SYW but nothing gets done.

Also, Eddie has a stake in Citibank.

I never liked SYW rewards since the points usually expired within a couple of weeks .... customers/members have enough on their plates beside having to keep track of 'points'.... for example Kohl's uses coupons and weekly sales that draw customers in, they scan the coupon and you get a certain percentage off. Very easy, plus their check out experience is much better than ours. Our Point of Sales systems are antiquated... no money to upgrade.

In my former store credit apps were run w/o the customers consent all the time. Either for both cards when the customer was applying for only one or forcing them to apply when they already had a card but had left it at home by changing 1 digit on the social. Not using socials if the person didn't have one due to immigration status and submitting a fake tax id or falsifying it if the applicant was under 18. All types of deception went on to meet the metrics. Encouraging people to lie about their rent and income. Federal offenses committed every day so the cashiers could stay employed. I wish the bankruptcy court could hear about this. Our store was number 1 in the region for credit though so every upper level manager loved us and the witch that monitored the metrics. She got paid as well as the SGM.

Obviously those high member numbers are from phoney accounts but if you think about it, in the last year there were only the 29 million accounts used actively. Doesn't matter fake or real accounts because it indicates a purchase. My guess is that it's even smaller because they are probably exaggerating to the extent allowed by law. The small number of outstanding points is bad news because it would not affect too many folks if the program is ended.

many of those 144,000,000 customers enrolled in SYWR are from me and the rest of the associates at my store. we all "signed up" 2-3 fake/phony customers every day for over a year so we could meet performance metrics. We also took surveys for each other and had friends come into the store to apply for credit every now and then knowing full well they would be denied,

The evidence is in the bankruptcy filing request to carry on business and promotional activity. The amounts come right from that document so the original poster is right. Sears does not talk about outstanding FREECASH, which must be in the billions. With 200 vendors taking a hike, customers won't have much to spend those points and FREECASH on.

SYWR might work if it wasn't so confusing and difficult to deal with at registers. Online is somewhat better, except for the huge list of exceptione and technical problems getting it to work.

$251k is a good number to encourage the court and creditors to keep the syw program. The real number is probably much larger, but burried in the buggy system that probably nobody can audit.

Syw was great while it lasted with good funding for the shoppers that used the system smartly. The system was designed to take advantage of customers but could be easily exploited to the customer advantage. It was probably a great tool to prop up financial numbers and take advantage of investors as well.

It always has been, look at Amazon it has prime, that gives you something. Costco always had a membership that gives you access to shop. SYWR has always been a data grab to sell the information for money you get no benefits other than a penny. The Citi joint venture was another grab as well no one wants a citi card they have the worst rates but you by the PR BS and they get your data plus shopping habits to sell and citi gets the payments

SYW is so stupid. The two most successful retailers right now are Amazon and Costco. Neither have stupid gimmicks. Who wants points? Nobody. The name sounds like some freshman year marketing student came up with it. We’ve got too many websites. And the root of most of our problems is the fact that Sears and Kmart systems were never integrated. We still have so many duplicate systems. Everything is twice as difficult to do with exception processing all over the place. Management never integrated the two companies.
