Thread regarding General Motors layoffs

The GM Layoff Process and Delays

I'm a Manufacturing Engineer in Warren and new to this website. Please excuse me if I'm rehashing previous threads. I didn't review the older threads. My thoughts on how things have progressed and are progressing--please comment with your thoughts:

  1. The EGMs submitted an employee-by-employee rank of their teams to HR in October

  2. Using payroll salary data, benefit data, CAP reviews, seniority, age, etc; HR is selecting it's ideal candidates for involuntary separation.

(Now this is where it gets dicey and I believe delays are occurring)

  1. HR has returned its list of layoff names back to the Senior Managers and Directors of each group.

  2. I believe the EGMs have not seen an official, formal list of names but I don't believe that the Directors and Senior Managers haven't exposed the lists to them informally and confidentially to ask "Hey, is it a mistake to layoff this person?"

  3. I don't know if the Directors have any "trump" cards but I assume the logistical nightmare of all this going down at once and EGMs/Directors arguing with HR over certain employees has caused a significant delay in the process. How does HR know how critical Employee X is to the group?

Over the years, I have seen so many undeserving people get promoted. In my own group, I see worthless employees protected by our EGM for some reason. Will those worthless employees get axed or will HR choose the ones who make a few dollars more in salary? HR has no clue other than a simple few words in their work history: "Meets Expectations", "Exceeds Expectations", or "Does not Meet Expectations". I'm sure the worthless have all been entered as "Meets" because our EGM has no clue. Nothing will surprise me in the next few weeks but you can bet that women and minorities will be protected. I'm not racist or s-xist, Just stating the truth.

This will be an interesting few weeks for all of us and I pray that all my colleagues, friends, and their families land on their feet sooner than later--no matter what happens. GM has been good to all of us for a lot of years but the way this is being handled is inhumane with zero empathy for what they have been putting us all through for months now--including the Holidays. God Bless you all.

Most of the managers have no idea which of their people does what either, so it doesn't matter whether HR makes the decision or the managers. Besides, the decision will probably just be made based on age and salary anyway.

I find it hard to believe that HR is going to decide who a manager is to let go of. They have no idea what people do based off their job title and salary alone.

They are performance based , let's be honest , I worked for a so called technical expert and the person was expert at having others in my group doing the work. The individual was an expert at surfing the intrernet , I was told by my manager they made a wrong choice and felt disappointed by the selection to make the person the technical expert , yet nothing was done and the person still has the same job! I have seen many qualified people passed over in favor of big talkers that couldn't beat there way out of a paper bag. GM does need to reduce redundant activity and all of us at the company have always known that. Management can be to passive and week at times , lots of people in charge but nobody does anything.

No one wants EV or autonomous , NO ONE! Including big oil business , Period. It all sounds good but none of it is practical , it will take 50 years for all of this to be on a global scale and if GM actually servives as a company then maybe just maybe they will be that so called powerhouse , that is if they aren't and we aren't completely controlled and owend by China and that includes the the United States , China produces everything and we as Americans lay down and except that fact , almost nothing is produced here.

@X9bDETV-8uuf GM's vision is perfectly clear- be front of the pack designing & producing a slew of EVs as the world pivots towards green solutions. Be a one-stop-shop producing autonomous vehicles & the software to operate them. Rake in massive profits with fleets of electric autonomous taxis in dense cities. Inhouse tech to mine all the data they accumulate with their sales & vehicles and produce gems of profit.

The vision relies heavily on some big gambles- if EVs or autonomous fail to produce, it will be a catastrophe. But if they don't, GM will be in a position to be a global powerhouse in transportation for the foreseeable future.

And what exactly is GMs vision? Answer = No one really has the answer. Today 22 million investment in Spring Hill for V8 , Go electric and autonomous vechicles Go ! Woo wee , Figurers lie and liers figure. There is a book called on a clear day you can see GM , well folks today it's become very clear. America is not apple pie and Chevrolet and it hasn't been for a very long time.

@X9bDETV-8pgo context clues.. they are not saying that they are "worthless" as human beings, they are saying they are "worthless" specifically in the context of how much value they deliver to the company

Never call a fellow human being “worthless”

Bottom line is the company is trying to save money. They are eliminating irrelevant positions and overpaid employees. Performance based eliminations wouldn't accomplish that. The only time performance would come into play is if you and several others hold the same job and you were identified as a department that needs mandatory cuts. Other than that, it's cost and relevancy to their future vision.

Today I heard they are holding off because of a protest at the auto show that is supposed to happen...but again so many rumors, so little facts.

What I have heard is they are gunning for people who have gotten the voluntary severance letter, teams that deal with car models that are no longer being produced, and teams that have more members than they really need. My director said that when he met with HR, they said these were more salary layoffs than a required headcount. So people who are making more money than they probably should be are in scope as well.

It may be different in other areas though. We heard the big ones are engineering, marketing, and IT. Those teams may follow the logic you laid out above since they have required cuts.
