Thread regarding Bank of New York Mellon Corp. layoffs

What motivates you to work at BNY Mellon ?

Most Employee surveys at BNY Mellon comes up with a question are employee's empowered enough to take their own decisions . I see Managers blocking our Calendars everyday for a Team meeting . This is like a prison . I don't think these meetings are really productive . It's a waste of time. There are so many managers to handle one team for a even simpler process a group of 7-8 people to continuously monitor them like a factory setup. Although they have moved most managers to an IC role i.e., no reportees under them the way they function is still the same .The expectation of the next level manager is different . Also I think managers deliberately block their calendars for useless meetings and calls just to show themselves busy . The only job of a manager is to make an employee's life hell. The high performing team at BNY Mellon is also going through the same agony .

Personally, I’ve always been a self starter, motivated and yes... I do think like an owner. At one year shy of 30 years here I find myself referring to our leaders as “Management” a term which I’ve never found myself using before. For good or bad, I’ve always worked 55+ hour weeks but now am now looking into this work life balance concept. You cannot think like an owner or even a teammate when you’re treated as a serf with no respect.

You business majors will recognize The Peter Principle.

The Peter principle is a concept in management developed by Laurence J. Peter, which observes that people in a hierarchy tend to rise to their "level of incompetence". In other words, an employee is promoted based on their success in previous jobs until they reach a level at which they are no longer competent, as skills in one job do not necessarily translate to another.

This is exactly where some of us are now, especially due to the recent reorganization that placed us in roles for which we are neither trained nor experienced. Every day, I wonder how my incompetence with affect the people that rely on me. Yes, I will try to learn my new job. But I imagine this could be as painful for them as it is for me.

With sincere apologies to all of those who think that their manager is incompetent...

I would bet that many of us were NOT “promoted” into a management position, but assigned to it as a lateral move from our individual role. Hey, this company is cheap, didn’t you notice?

Most of the employees are working for the paycheck so they can pay bills and get food for the family... The day we get a better job offer in a better company , we will be outta this company as our hard work is not being valued by Mgmt and we are being treated like sh-- !

Yes managers don't have a strategic task to accomplish so the most available option is to make their subordinate's life miserable. Strategic ideas that would bring real profits to the company but all they do is instill fear not trust among employee's . Divide and rule . Who wants to even take up such role even if they are promoted to a managerial position ? Show them the money and they 'll do it ..

I am always motivated by the PEOPLE with whom I work. The team, the collaboration, the commraderie, sharing great successes and supporting each other to out best performane. Yay for US.

So the recent cuts, reorganization and rumors have been devastating. Teams are split up, valuable resources let go, most are depressed and preoccupied with the pain and disruption, and worried about what is to come. Cheerful people just seem delusional, and that causes even more conflict (as we wonder what planet they are on).

So, it’s the people that motivate me, not BNY. Sort of like going to war. I imagine that people in the trenches might care a whole lot about their comrades, and not too much about the politics of their country.

Good luck to us all.

I would NEVER use the word motivates when it comes to my decision to remain at BNYMELLON.

What keeps me here is 5 weeks of vacation plus holidays. Work-life balance for me includes the beach and other travel destinations. That would be much more difficult if my vacation time was slashed from changing employers.

With that said, I am among the many that hope to be let go with a package in hand.

I was just made a manager of ten people. I was told that I must do my “old” job too. So I have those meetings plus manager meetings. Yes, it must look like a lot of meetings for a manager, but they are all real meetings.

I couldn't agree more. Those of us that have been left in a people manager role have no time in our day. News flash for anyone that thinks we are filling our calendars with useless meetings, all of our previous goals, expectations, responsibilities didn't go away when we inherited that new team(s), it just got piled on top of all that.

The good news is Charlie doesn't believe in work life balance so we can make full use of the 24 hour days.

What non-managers might not realize is: the recent reorg required us to to keep our old job, while taking on even more people.

How do I disrespect my team by telling them the company thinks they are only worth 15 or 20 percent of my time?

These are the values of BNY Mellon. They don’t respect me, they don’t respect you.
