Thread regarding General Motors layoffs

The managers only know what people they like

Most of the managers are clueless about who on their team has the better skills or who does the most work. They only know which people they like, which isn't the same as most skilled. Odds are the managers favorites will stay and their best employees will be let go.

Shortly put but very accurate. The original poster is @Xg07Krf-vds

I just randomly came across this post from over a year ago... man time flies. I remember how tense and depressing it was in Pontiac back in January 2019. Definitely a scary time for a lot of folks.

I have to respectfully disagree with some of the whiny anti- management sentiments on this board, especially the last two about Bob and Shilpan. I've worked with both of them and found them to be professional. Demanding?... yes, but also fair and reasonable.

I think insecure people have a need to convince themselves that any perceived threat to their job is a conspiracy against them....that they're somehow victims of a culture of favoritism, affirmative action, ageism, their own managers' incompetence or lack of understanding of what they do, or some other excuse.

The reality is that personnel reductions tied to cost savings initiatives s— for everyone. A lot of otherwise acceptable, mid-performing employees lose out. In some cases even highly skilled performers are no longer needed due to shifts in technical needs. At the end of the day, some pre-determined number of employees are cut to save money. It's not because management had it out for them, or weren't aware of their contributions or that they were the wrong age, ethnicity or gender. Flexible, hard working employees that bring something the company needs to the table that can't be done by someone else at a lower cost are usually safe, but even that's not a given.

With the current Covid 19 situation, I'm afraid there will be another wave of reductions at GM coming in the second half of 2020. I hope not, but we're already seeing long term reductions in vehicle production forecasts, and Covid 19 isn't going away any time soon.

Both Shilpan Amin and Robert Benedict showed extream favoritism to specifc employees , I witnessed it too in Pontiac Global propulsion systems. Typical GM managers

The director I had just loved to hear himself talk in his all people meetings , all his many degrees from four or five college's , a director that's 40 years old that never came into our department one time , ever! His speech about" children of centroid" , what the hell does that mean? He was asked direct questions from the audience of about 1000 people at Global propulsion Systems and never gave direct answers to any of them? Danced around question after question , Shilpan Amin is part of the BIG problem at GM and should be fired immediately , absolute mo--n. Nobody in my department to this day knows what he does or who he is , it's a mystery. Lots of people kissing his A-- including my Sr Manager in the front row and speaking of him yeah he's a bully to people on his team that he doesn't like to the point people would move to other jobs if they weren't blocked by him. Bob Benedict and Shilpan Amin should be walked out , both good ol boy GM managers that don't do anything but blow hot air and get paid alot of money , Are you listening Marry B---- ??? Investigation should happen at Pontiac Global propulsion Systems , to many good people are getting royally screwed.

This is true . I have also observed that Since the managers need to have a certain headcount reporting to them in order for them to manage a group which I think is 10 , they don’t let go of the bad resources and keep giving them good reviews no matter what !culture at its worst !

so true, and it seems like a lot of "managers" really have no business being in the positions they hold when they neither have real managerial/leadership skills nor know the actual business functions of their teams.

I've been thinking about this since the layoff's were announced. GM has admitted that culture is a huge problem but, all these layoff's are going to do is harden the culture for exactly the reason above.
