Thread regarding Macy's Inc. layoffs

Why do you stay at Macy's?

It's obvious that we are failing on all fronts and I don't see us recovering any time soon - if ever. I'm still here mostly because of the people I work with, I am probably in one of the very few stores that have great teams all together, but even with that I've been considering leaving more and more often.

What are your reasons for still being here?

A door closes, another opens. I had a great regional support executive level position, but I also read the writing on the wall. The job was not eliminated, but a restructuring required me to re-apply for the position, which I declined and received a generous separation package instead. That previous job was combined with another position, which I could have handled, but it would have ramped up my stress level. Retirement door opened for me, I early retired, although a hotel company offered me an executive level job, I still chose retirement and I'm just living the life, family, and travels. I encourage those who are 50+ to weigh your options very carefully, have an open heart conversation with family and watch your health and peace of mind.

When you work as many hours as we do at Macy's, if you want to meet someone it is very likely that you might meet someone at work. I'm on the west coast and we had a VPSM who moved into the biggest store and she started dating another store manager who left his wife and daughter for her and they are still together. Spending as much time as we do in the workplace it's inevitable that these kind of relationships happen, absence does not make the heart grow fonder. It is kind of weird seeing them together at the store and pretending that we don't know they are together. This kind of thing happens all the time in retail.

Just saw someone’s comment “I’m boning my Mgr, she looks out for me”?? This seems to be an ongoing trend at Macy’s. We have a “Sales Supervisor” that’s having a relationship with a colleague. The executive team’s been informed, but nothing has been done. It’s the craziest thing I’ve ever witnessed. Making out in the break room, hugging, kissing on the sales floor during business hours? It’s embarrassing! GET A ROOM!!

For someone that has access to that collegue’s employment records? What happened to “INTEGRITY ALWAYS”?

“We appreciate you”... “you’re one of the hardest working colleagues we have”...just empty words if you don’t back it up with the $ in my opinion.

Adding more duties/responsibilities without compensation? Is this how you show your appreciation?

“Management” team consists of some of the laziest group of people I’ve ever seen. But since the colleagues in their departments have a better work ethic...we make them look good!

Honestly the only reason I stay is because of the discount and a handful of colleagues that I work with.

Target’s starting pay $12... litterally takes more than 5 years to get to that pay rate with Macy’s. WTH?

How's the environment without in store HR? It's been a year since that group was eliminated. Now MST gone, whose on the charts for next year, end housekeeping contracts? Sales and support associates to take care of store cleanliness

@XoKW4ux-3gyf, I’m sorry that is how you were treated by your management team.

The store i work in is suffering from the same staffing shortages, so i also end up doing all of the things you listed in my dept when i should be focusing on sales. It is hell and i am actively looking to leave. I literally work so hard most days that i almost faint from go to hard too long without a break or refresher.

I am lucky though in that my management team always makes it clear how much they appreciate what i do and never put me down. If anything, they always remind me “don’t worry about this. Worry about the customers first. That’s your first priority” and my manager always gets down and dirty helping me when the store is quiet or just taking over whatever project i was on when i have to focus on customers. He and every other managers always thank me for what i did. So i am lucky.

But in the end, i need to do what’s best for myself and my family. A job that pays what Macy’s does should not drain every last drop of energy from you.

Enough is enough. I just retired after almost 30 yrs as a sales associate. I was thrown under the bus for not bending over and kissing the butts of 2 obnoxious customers( nicest way I could say it) on Black Fri. Then I was told that my sales were being effected because I was spending too much time doing the stock, markdowns, rtv's , setting the sales and whetever else needed to be done. I finally realized how unappreciated I was and that taking pride in my performance was only important to me and not the company. I should write a book but it's already been done. Check out " Retail Hell". The stereotypes are spot on.

The opening question and statement could have been written by me. Same words same emotions. Our team is in tact. Store is doing pretty well. However I know the changes coming and I am dreading it. I have been waiting for a hopeful severance, that I think will never come now. Not really sure if I can hold out much longer. Going to have to pay off some bills , then find some alternative health insurance. Then it will be time for me to go. I love the people I work with, but I fear they will not be around much longer. Without them there, I don't want to be there either. So I'll just see how it plays out and pray for guidance.

i know some people do not have a choice and some people have made it a career, but i can tell you i got out after a few years and happy i did. there is a reason there is so much turn over in the stores. i was AST and told it was the best job to have when i was offered the job. how important it was! well, the job s---s and is the worst. the company wants to squeeze as much out of you as they can. so if you can get out, my advice is to do it.

I am trying desperately to leave. I spend all of my spare time looking for another job. Dedication, hard work is not rewarded at Macy’s.

I finally made the decision to leave after 6 years. There has to be something better out there. Macy’s is a sinking ship, time to get out.

It's like an abusive relationship..... it is falling apart . Expectations are not realistic killing yourself and risking your families welll being is not worth it! I have several co-workers diagnosed with cancer and 1 with a stroke. Get out while the getting is good or wait for the payout when we are sold.

I left because everything had finally taken its toll. Expectations were irrationally high for the level of support provided, and I wasn’t going to kill myself and family for the new normal. It was a tough decision, but in conversations with colleagues who remain, it has only become more difficult. People stay because it is easier to deal with it than make the effort to look elsewhere for work. People also stay because of time invested. Seniority, accrued vacation, and great coworkers can keep you trapped. THe fear of the unknown at a brand new job is also often more worrisome that living the current, known daily dysfunction.

It’s not easy to leave. It took me over one year to realize it wasn’t going to get better anytime soon, and I was sacrificing too much by staying.

I have many years with the company. I survived my small store closing 3 years ago. Took a transfer to one of the large stores in the area. My job was "impacted" last year and just like that I was gone. I was devasted. I was asked back as a flex employee 3 months later. Same salary, of course no pto. I came back because I needed the job (I have always been part time) and missed the people. However, the pressure I have felt and the poor morale are making me rethink all of it. I like flex because I can say no when I really can't work, but even part time flex the presale goals are so high and hard to reach. I am waiting to see if there are any more cuts. If I am cut again, I won't be crying this time. And this just may be the year I finally say goodbye on my own.
