Thread regarding Sam's Club layoffs

BYOD

I just had a round with a CM. It is strongly suggested that we use the resources that are "given" to us through BYOD. I was told that it is not the companies responsibility to provide TC70's to associates, Sam's / Walmart is giving you the apps for your phone. (Me) No compensation for phone bill (CM) the company gives you a discount on your phone bill (Me) provided you use the inflated AT&T, Sprint or Verizon which discounts it down to more than we are paying with Cricket, Straight Talk, etc. Some of us do not have the unlimited plan. This Club has six TC70's and Fresh keeps three of those how are we supposed to do our job? (CM) I suggest you embrace the new technology and get with the times or you will be left behind and in danger of loosing your job.

So did he just say to me to use BYOD or I could loose my job? Has this company tested this termination hypothesis with the legal department? I feel this is a way to get rid of the older associates.

I was so angry that I forgot to hit record on my phone until the last of our conversation, so if you have any conversations with management, you might want to record what is said.

BYOD is being introduced since the majority of the clubs can not maintain their handhelds. The club I am at we have 40, but you are lucky if you can find one. A few months ago we did a sweep of the club after they pinged all our handhelds. Only 26 showed to be in the building. 12 were accounted for by simply walking around and taking them from associates. 3 were found in the cooler in a box tucked in a corner. I watched a cooler associate walk in to the cooler turn to where the box was and walk out of the cooler and start digging through a nearby box bin. Later it was confirmed he was hiding them so he would have one for every shift. The CPU associates hide them as well found 2 in Photo and 4 in an office in a cabinet marked CPU only.

While I am in a state that supposedly requires all companies to provide their employees with everything they need to do the job. I would not mind being able to use BYOD. It is just plain annoying and embarrassing to have a member ask you question about your club and not being able to answer it or having to stop what you are doing to find a Thinclient to look up the member's question.

Fjv — all these new rules like BYOD and whatnot; still there are associates (small percentage) who just don’t do a damn thing at work — people who are so good at not working, but getting away with it because they abuse the rules, however small they are there...These new rules will push them out of the club and possibly bring in better people, just a thought - smallest positive to it.

CM’s will probably promote based on such things as usage of BYOD — I’d rather have a BYOD associate that is more productive than one without BYOD. It will play into the Big Data the CM can look up on you in the future — yes Big Data will show the ASM’s and CM how productive you are (think graphs of productivity too) — (think about a realistic threshold of performance you are unable to meet, then held accountable for with a coaching) — Performance coaching now possible with Big Data to back it up — and many other measurable, accountable forms that weren’t possible when they didn’t have that Big Data to prove why they just coached you out of a job. ——- Still want to work at Sam’s Club?

What about associates without smartphones? I know it’s rare, but there are associates who can’t afford or don’t want one

It is absolutely accurate that an associate can not be required to utilize BYOD but please be careful as “I don’t have a handheld” or “I couldn’t find a handheld” are not excuses to protect you from accountability for lack of performance or productivity. You do have the right to choose but as with any choice one has to be prepared for the consequences of that choice.

Let's actually answer the OP shall we?

When you sign up for BYOD it says EVERYWHERE that it is 100% optional and NOT a job requirement. It is not a condition of employment.

You might want to point that out to your CM.

Yeah you have to be real careful about recording people these days — I knew an associate that would do that, but he was shady and worked at the worst pace ever on the sales floor. I wouldn’t record, but I would write notes in front of the CM to let him know don’t play w me.

OP - you may want to check the state law in your state before recording conversations with your supervisor. There are 11 states in the country that require two party consent, meaning you must ask the person you are talking to if it’s ok to tape the conversation.

PS - please forward your mailing address to me, so that I can send you an invoice for the legal advise aforementioned above. I will give you the special Plus Membership discount because you are one of my peers.

If you read the intro to the layoff.com it states:

TheLayoff.com is a simple discussion board for all of us who would like to learn more about the rumors or possibility of job cuts in our company.

The workforce reduction process is inherently secretive and plagued with rumors. Companies release little or no details while planning such resource actions. On the other hand, the lives of each of us may be greatly impacted by these top-secret decisions - hence all the anxiety that workers may experience.

Enter TheLayoff.com - The purpose of this site is to provide a space for anyone who'd like to discuss the possibility, likelihood or impacts of layoffs in a company of interest.

Thus, not staying up with technology through your cell phone by way of BYOD could result in termination. This could be a mass termination of many associates, maybe you.

Contact the labor board. They can get in trouble for making you use your personal phone for work.

To the “not a lay-off” comment — dude or whoever you are — go away. Now, this CM — use your own device rule is so ridiculous, the pressure from him is not in an ethical spirit at all. How about this? Don’t take a smartphone to work, buy a junk phone to use while at work or none at all. Problem solved. This company is ridiculous with their demands, they pay minimum wage for crying out loud — dummies.

Follow up for everyone, I thought about the original post for one day before I posted it, I wrote my resignation letter after being with this company for 15 years, at 68 years old I have had enough, my house is paid for, I have no expenses, it is time to spend my savings, 401K and stock. My last day will be May 17th, good luck to you all, if you see a burgundy motor home come pulling up in your parking lot it just might be me. Don't worry, be happy, life is to short. SunShine

BYOD doesn’t fly in California because the State requires employee compensation when a personal device is used for work-related tasks.

Saw this coming, thank god I found a new and actually higher paying job. 1.5 weeks left !!

2-3 clubs that the same 3rd party wireless company in our district are pulling out. The guy whom runs the area said Sams screwed them over already and giving them 1/2 of what they where in first few months. They cannot afford to pay people to run it. I wonder whats else os going to change with all these “changes”. They need to close optical, every associate Ive met are miserable. They can’t drive sales with c-appy frames, and spent millions on some stupid CL program that puts you on a QVC like payment plan.
