Thread regarding Oracle Corp. layoffs

Worse than a knitting circle

All this hysteria here.

Layoffs, re-calibration happens in any LARGE org. OCI-C got big paychecks and RSUs.

Some of these guys hired onto OCI total compensation would have made you tear up with envy.

The direction has changed. The gamble on big paydirt was lost.

Some, I read here, had 20y under their belt at Oracle. Seriously? You did not see this coming? And you should be celebrating you got 20 years at one company. It's unheard of nowadays.

Oracle is a business. And it's not their business to look out for YOUR welfare/career. Their obligation is fulfilled once they pay you for your hours. It's that simple.

This is not a 'massive' layoff by any measure. Oracle has 130k employees worldwide. Do the math.

The ones here who are concerned about pending/future layoffs should probably be the first ones to have started their job hunting. Else whining and complaining on an anon forum is just psychological salve for your inaction and ineptness.

I had an interview for a rep position and was told there is an indefinite hold on hiring. Is that common thing at Oracle?

OP: I would support a change, I appreciate Oracle is a business not a charity. but this is not a change, this is a desperate move to catchup what the world is doing, after many years of wrong decisions and lack of vision. Do I have to remind you what LE was saying about cloud just a few years ago?

nope, this is not a change, it's a way to secure some positions cutting workforce to show marginality even with a declining business.

Why do you think Oracle owes you anything more than a paycheck? Or any other company? You're paid to do some dumb-a--- job and you get paid. That's the contract you have and either you or Oracle can decide to stop it with no notice. There's no guarantees or reward for your loyalty, seriously if you think Oracle cares about your feelings, your family or your future, you are delusional. They're a corporation and they exist to make money, that's it. When they stop making money, the executive henchmen (and SC - but she's a henchman too) cut people. It's not going to change, You can make a change for yourself, leave, quit, find a job that's fulfilling and a company that cares about you. It's not this one.

This is still a half-assed effort. This is not a re-calibration. Oracle wants to be a cloud company, it needs to take a stand and kill-off its on-premise development and go all-in on cloud. Can't ride 2 horses with one a--.

The days of any company being loyal to even the most hardworking people are long gone - and have been for many years, this is nothing new.

Its always important to have a plan for your next step, to be aware of what the market is looking for, and to keep knowledge and skills up to date. Layoffs can happen to anyone at any time for any reason and it can have nothing to do with your performance (or everything if you are a slacker - let's be real, layoffs are still a good time to get rid of low performers).

It is never easy for the people who have been let go. Oracle seems to handle this particularly poorly of other companies I've seen but I've never really seen anyone handle it well.

Loyalty to a company is a good thing. Loyalty to yourself and your family is better.

If Oracle really is committed to changing to a cloud services company, more changes can be expected. If you don't see that, wake up. You can try to position yourself to take advantage of that - or not. Unfortunately, it seems that Seattle is becoming the new HQ.

times they are a-changing.

well well, what are the top managers doing ? they probably knew the guys and business that were not doing well and were going to get axed well in advance based on the poor quarterly results. They should have given them ATLEAST 3 months heads up..Thats the minimum you can do as a human to another human!

I agree, this isn't "massive" by anyone's math and you do a job-you get a paycheck. This isn't your family business or some subsidized work program - if you don't like your job or your pay - you can leave. And if Oracle decides they don't need you, then you get a rif and some money. That's more than they're obligated to do. It's not nice but it's a business - the shareholders care about revenue and profits, not how many years you hang out at your job. If you're unlucky enough to be in a group that isn't strategic or profitable, then deal with it like an adult and get a new job. Spending 20 years at any job sounds like pain and boring times to me, it's time you did something new. Life outside this sh--ty company has got to be better. I'll take a 6 month package any day.

130 k engineers for what? for c-appy products which no one uses except inhouse ? Being laid off today I suggest all smart engineers to find a new job soon and get out of there... their old c-appy code, c-appy technologies no one uses .. spend 4 hours at work and 8 hours preparing to get into AWS or Google, only two real companies !
