Why Aren’t We Organizing?

Why aren’t we organizing strikes? Why aren’t we holding Verizon accountable for their worker’s rights abuses?

Regardless of whether or not you’re pro- or anti-union, a strike is an effective means to express our discontent. It garners media attention, which is the last thing Verizon wants. Even a few strikes across a few districts would be a massive blow to Verizon’s image. As evidenced by the Pulse survey, a substantial portion of workers are unhappy, why not weaponize it?

Most of my coworkers are willing to organize, what about yours?

The time for organizing is now before it gets too much worse.

But if the union is smart they will get the retail, indirect, telesales, and b2b channels to participate. They need all the workers to join or else the initiative will fail

Simply because the average American retail worker is meek. The main reason retail has really never been a decent place to work is because it is low skilled and requires little training. Companies know this and take advantage of it knowing most will just move on if they don't like conditions rather than standing up and having a voice. It also doesn't help that they are easily replaced with a constant crop of low skilled new hires with the same characteristics. The retailers jut wash rinse and repeat. Skilled trades, pilots, police, firefighters, railroad workers etc. tend to unionize due to the higher barrier to entry in there respective fields. This and their resolve to improve pay, safety and retirement compensation is why they live better lives than an individual in retail. No one has ever really gotten anywhere being unrepresented working at a retail outlet that they themselves don't own. It is a losing proposition.

Union trolls. CWA s—s a–. Only people who still want union are the old heads who are overpaid for doing the same work for 20+ years and think that corporations should take care of them for the rest of their lives. Your skills are or are becoming obsolete. Find a cause. Fight corporate greed but not by joining the union. They're just as bad. They want more members to keep paying the union leadership.

CWA is the only Union that wants Wireless employees. I don’t see IBEW or anyone else looking to get Wireless.

Ask the XO technicians who thought joining the Union was going to be better for them when they came aboard . The Union was a great help for those workers who lost there vacation, sick days and years of service .

I left VZW in 2016 after 20 years. I enjoyed good pay and benefits. For a long time my job was very satisfying and I was proud to be at VZW. However, the constant leadership changes, especially leaders moved from wireline to wireless, along with increased competition caused a culture shift so extreme I decided it was time to go. I've stayed in touch with friends at VZW and know that it has gotten worse since I left. That said, I am certain the union is not the answer, especially the CWA. It is a declining labor union with a terrible record of negotiating poor contracts for wireless employees. Just study the numerous contracts the CWA negotiated for AT&T Mobility employees over the last 15 years. When AT&T retail employees first signed up for the union in 2003 (back in "Cingular" days), and during every contract negotiating cycle since, employees wanted the union to negotiate limits on the company's right to change the commission plan and quotas. The CWA has never come close to achieving this for employees. Every labor contract covering Wireless retail employees includes a clause that gives the company the right to make commission plan and quota changes whenever it wants without union interference. The CWA has completely failed to fulfill its promises, yet it continues to collect dues from employees. The company is far from perfect and I agree with comments from employees about the negative changes, but sadly, the days of Verizon domination in the wireless market are over. No union, especially the CWA, can turn back the clock. The only winner of going union would be the CWA. It will collect dues even if it fails to help employees.

Here in FL, we're not organizing b/c there are a lot of us that, surprise, are actually from the north and north east, where we've seen first hand how ineffective Unions are in our industry. And we, here in FL, at least don't want our money going to them for nothing so that they can go on their lavish vacations while our working conditions remain unchanged, or even worsen. It's obvious that you're not accustomed to real life workers who have been cheated by Unions, b/c if you were, you'd be able to answer your own question.. but I'm pretty sure you're just some union representative trolling this board trying to stir something up b/c you know that your membership is down, yeah, you can't hide that one, can you? Any id--t can google that Union membership is actually decreasing.. must s--- that your livelihood depends on getting more people to unionize.. go troll some construction workers forum!! talk about less than ideal working conditions..

@ZSBFJe0-kjp I won't tell you to go find a better job, because maybe you can't. But go find somewhere that has the work environment that you enjoy and that gives you your perceived sense of self worth so that you can stop complaining and concentrate more on bettering yourself and possibly having more financially for you and your family. Your working conditions are not horrible, I work in the same retail environment. I don't see how my job here in FL is any different. Oh, I have beaches nearby, so what. The beaches are not what I'm thinking about when I'm serving my customers and being rewarded. I've been in retail for over 7 years, yes, I'm still a Solutions Specialist and yes, I've been through all the changes, and I have even changed store locations, so that I could get some experience elsewhere when I was feeling like I was ready for some change. I've been around long enough to see those who don't perform as well become distractions in my store and try to place blame on 'the horrible work conditions.." wahhhhh.. I was only 20 when I started, and I remember being immature, just like a lot of these other entitled babies. For your sake, I hope you grow up too and realize the grass isn't greener elsewhere and that you're accountable for your own future and happiness here.

To anyone that feels so inclined to comment any variant of “find a better job,” here’s my response to that:

If you don’t want to fight for better working conditions for everyone, then you frankly don’t deserve a job at all. In what twisted reality should workers not want better wages, better working conditions, flexible hours, etc? Do you truly believe that people have the luxury to uproot their entire lives and find work elsewhere, or be forced to start over? If that’s your solution, then I hope you take your own advice and find a corporation worth defending. You’re a fool if you think Verizon is a meritocracy, and even more foolish if you believe the work environment is the responsibility of the laborer.
