As you know, Corinthian is currently under investigation by a number of state and federal government agencies. We are cooperating with these authorities and are confident in the choices each of our employees has made to comply with our obligations to students, the law and to each other. During investigations like these, employees often have questions. Below is some helpful information that may answer your questions. I am always available to discuss these in greater detail and to answer any specific questions you might have.
Document Preservation
It is critical that during the course of the investigations, you must not remove or destroy any documents, papers, electronic files or other such materials in compliance with the document retention memorandum circulated on August 13, 2014 (and accompanying this memo). Routine or otherwise innocent destruction of documents may be misinterpreted by the authorities—thus we ask that you carefully re-review the August 13th memo. If you have any questions about document preservation, please contact me at the above numbers or addresses.
Requests for Information
Any requests by government agents for documents or information should be reported immediately to the Law Department or me. These requests will be handled through legal counsel. The same guidance applies to any contact by news media, reporters or investigators.
Requests for Interviews or Conversations
Government agents or lawyers may contact you at your office, home or even on your cell phone. They may appear unannounced and may request to interview you. You are free to talk to them but are not required to submit to an interview. You have the right to tell them that you would first like to speak with an attorney. You have the right to meet and seek advice from an attorney before you make a decision about speaking with the government. If you ultimately decide to speak with government agents, you also have the right to choose a time and place that is convenient for you.
Having an attorney with you at a meeting with government agents can help avoid any confusion that you may have from questions asked by the agents. Notes taken by an attorney can also help minimize later misquoting of your statements by the agents. The School will arrange for an attorney to advise you if it becomes necessary and you desire to speak with one. Please contact me and I will make the appropriate arrangements.
We all regret the distraction and concern that may be caused by any government agency or its agents, but we at the Campus Support Center and in the Law Department are here to support you. If you are contacted by government representatives, please let us know.
We appreciate your cooperation and dedication to serving all our students. Hang tough.
