Thread regarding Qualcomm Inc. layoffs

Qualcomm, Is it still an innovator?

The past 10 years the only issue discussed in Qualcomm is if the layoffs will trigger the WARN act. Where is the innovation for the next big thing. Everything in this company became CFO decisions on how many mils will cut from each business units based on some spreadsheet calculations. This is not Dr Irwin's Jacobs company any more when the innovation was the every day top discussion across all the business units. It became the lawyers' and CFO's company.

What is the next big thing in this company these days? Nobody knows. In all hands meetings they refer to innovation initiatives like science projects in high school, without commitment and vision. The 20% margin that Murthy is talking about kills every innovation in this company. Firing people with 30 Billions in the bank doesn't make sense for me. I hope the BOD will reexamine the mission and the strategies of the executive leadership and act. Company without vision and commitment to the innovation soon becomes another failed statistic. People that are looking for innovation they better look somewhere else because more layoffs are coming and there is no big projects in this company that can redeploy people as was happening the last 22 years that I have in this company.

This is the result of a company taken over by lawyers and accountants, and it does not look like anything is going to change anytime soon. Licensing has become so big that everything is evolving around that business. Essentially everyone else is dispensable. BOD only answer to the share holders and they will push for more cuts.

Worked at the Q for 11+ years and can't agree more. The working environment began its change for the worse after Dr. Irwin retired, and that downhill momentum just accelerated. Sad to see a company that was different in all the right ways leap onto the quarterly profit bandwagon.

Can't agree more! All of the executives have no clue about innovation.

I agree. The innovation is no longer there. Everyone just worries about the bottom line, like any other company. It just means that working at the Q is not as compelling as it once was. It gives engineers more reasons to find work elsewhere. Who's going to put in sweat and tears ?

Well put..that was spot on. The 20% hurdle rate would stifle innovation like no other. By staying within our comfort zone and building products in areas that appear profitable (at least for now), we will definitely have nothing new to show for our work
