Thread regarding Optum layoffs

Good luck to all of us next Thursday

It was indeed supposed to be this Thursday. In a meeting today I was told there is a good chance it'll be moved to next Thursday. They'll make a final decision tomorrow. The packages haven't been signed off on yet by finance.
OP: @aw+1jsf3nkpm

Sounds legit, so putting it up for everyone to see. If anyone has any additional info, please share.

We lost almost half our staff through layoffs and transferring (BTW you had 2 days to agree to a transfer that could be over an hour away or else it was voluntary quitting and no unemployment) 85% of the work is not on the back off MAs. Calls, scheduling, referrals, patient mychart messages, any and all faxes that come in, while working a 20 patient a day clinic (that's 20 patients per MA.) We have, at any given time, about 115 tasks in our inbaskets and between 50 to 90+ referrals to be submitted or followed up on. Every week MAs are handed a new task we'll take over or will be responsible for "that only takes a couple of minutes." And dont forget handling angry patients (rightfully angry but still.) My co-pays as a patient went up, that's the cherry on top. Its abusive and demoralizing. I loved this company. I loved my job. We worked hard to earn our reputation and maintain high standards. We stressed integrity and compassion. Now, this company makes me sick. Raises and incentives are all but gone. They want you to "really go above and beyond in your position" ...aka, they want you to do more work for free in the hopes that it'll be recognized. It won't. Our "additional clinical staff" they're gifting us with are just temps. They have no specific training for our work flow and can only stay for a limited amount of time. But dont worry...the Optum Cares Bear will bring you some bags of chips and a hug.

I was sent packing by Optum on the last rounds of cuts. Never had a bad review, met or exceeded goals, and enjoyed working there. I found a new home with some similar faces at ConcertoCare. Similar to Optum but small and young.

It based on years of service and your GL code. The grid is on here, and on Sparq. There is no negotiating of it. The one person I know who was RIF'd last year and tried to negotiate still hasn't received a dime, cashed out his retirement, has exhausted unemployment and is still job hunting 10 months later... If you have enough funds to wait on severance, sure- you can try, but you aren't really likely to win, and severance isn't even a requirement in many states, so depending on where you are, they could terminate you with NO severance.

Good luck.

I was told on 04/29 Tues that my last day is 5/13 Tues. I have been working for the company since Late May 2020, and it is almost 5 years. My servance payment is only 4 weeks of base pay, is that normal? Should I ask for more? My manager talked to me about the termination and sent me the Severance Agreement. Should I try to ask her for more weeks directly or should I talk to HR?

For Optum, we are just numbers. Your performance and number of years do not matter. Your director and manager do not decide who will be laid off. It’s the higher ups who decides and they are just looking at the employees who have high salaries. I was very disappointed at Optum. I used to be proud at them but not anymore.

It is a non-american company pretending to me American business that sells products in the USA. That is it.

I got told this morning that I would be laid off with a 2 week end date. This was not part of the voluntary layoff. I have been a senior software developer at Optum for 3 years. It appears that they are layoff more US workers and moving our work to offshore developers.

The states that still have FPM/OAH business and are "safe" for now.... for how long? What's the long-term plan? As someone previously wrote are you just "collecting a paycheck until your team is on the block?" Will it just be temporary until that line of business folds as well?

So whoever commented “ stop with scare tactics”. You have some nerve speaking on the behalf of the UHC PEX Provider Advocates. Do you know the great job most of us did, the trust we built w our core and strategic providers/facilites. Do you know they will now have to endure people ( chat CS) not knowing on thing about their groups. WTF is your stupidity about. Wait watch and see the turmoil that will now spout due to some of the TOP Provider Advocates now gone. Do you think providers want to restart from scratch on some high priority issues at hand, now that their Advocate is gone. Wake up and smell the coffee. I guarantee YOU will fail being on the OPTUM side. UBH ( if that’s what your under as an advocate) has been a thorn with non responses, terrible relationships building and providers/facilities giving no direction. Next time you respond think of the people that may read it. #hopeyourjobisnowaffected

Here is the playbook for Optum. The game starts the day you are hired or acquired. You are at risk. Every quarter there is a new episode of the hunger games where you might end up being a tribute. Nothing usually happens until after the quarterly earning report for investors. The strategy is already done and the lists of tributes are already complete the hammer is dropped the thursday of a pay week. Normally you are off the books by then end of the month following the event. Years of service, age and higher pay grade are not in your favor. If the company can find a way to eliminate your role it will or find another cheaper alternative. Never ever get comfortable and build that war chest from day 1 . High school rules apply so it is one big popularity contest and always will be. Insert any corporate logo and same rule apply. Just be grateful they dont play the pip game here to get rid of older higher paid employees and drag on the torture.

To the person who referred to themselves as “leader here“ don’t think your job is any safer than anybody else’s. And I think you’re a piece of sh-t for stating that you shouldn’t be worried about your employment if you do your job and do it well. You are sadly mistaken, and completely out of touch with reality. Yes, people are worried about their jobs. And not for nothing, you should be too. So “leader, I’d love to hear your comments after you get that pink slip, too.

Every week a layoff is anticipated and everyone who is complaining that it’s been delayed another week… well, if the layoffs happened and you survived, you would still be in limbo just waiting for the next layoff.

Whether it’s today, next week, a month or 3 months from now, you’re either out of a job and hoping to find another job before the severance runs out, or you’re getting a paycheck until your team is on the block. You wouldn’t be here if you were just waiting for your turn and trying to anticipate it.

Just be ready for it, any day, anytime, if you work for Optum (or any corporation these days), your job is not secure. Ever.

So.....hinting at lay offs week after week. continued skirting around the issue of 'do you have a job or not have a job'. Not actually answering the questions. The entire team is anxious, not sleeping and worried about whether we are going to have a job last week, this week, and now....perhaps next week. WHO KNOWS!!! My gosh!!! this is an atrocious way to manage people who are worried about paying bills/mortgages/putting food on the table.!

UHG reporting tons of layoffs, apparently some office in Las Vegas the whole 3 and 4 floor got hit, C/S , and PEX etc close to 30000 are scheduled. Other areas Underwriters with 15 years of experience got the boot, and for everyone who thinks that this company employs 400,000 and they are here in America. Most of those jobs are overseas. There are not that many employees left here in the USA.

stop with the scare tactics. Leader here. We normally we do not know till the last minute, there is no indication that anybody on the Optum site is getting laid off next Thursday. You have to keep in mind that Optum has a lot less employees than United Healthcare And removing 20% of “their” workforce that was either under performing or had jobs that were automated, still leaves hundreds of thousands of workers at United Healthcare. Optum already did their layoffs cutting nearly 10% of the workforce. Unless you are an under performer, there is no reason to be worried. Stop throwing dates on here and scaring people. We’ve heard nothing about this. Additionally, we already had the reorganization when our VP was hired at the end of last year. Do I think that there is a chance that senior leadership could scale down? Yes. But otherwise? Please stop. When United Healthcare let 400+ people go yesterday, it was their provider relations advocates who are in the community. Provider still have an avenue of chatting with the same individuals online. Having hundreds of advocates nationwide was ridiculous. Optum doesn’t operate in that fashion. We have a quarter of the staff that they do.

According to NJ WARN Notice the layoffs were supposed to happen today for 71 people. If it hasn't happened today (4/23/2025), Optum could end up giving extra weeks of severance pay.
https://www.nj.gov/labor/assets/PDFs/WARN/2025_WARN_Notice_Archive.pdf

I search in google "nj warn notice law"

"Consequences of Non-Compliance:
Severance Pay Penalty:
If the employer fails to provide the required 90-day notice, they must pay an additional four weeks of severance pay to each affected employee. "

"The NJ WARN Act, formally known as the Millville Dallas Airmotive Plant Job Loss Notification Act, requires New Jersey employers with 100 or more employees to provide 90 days' advance notice to employees, the state, and local governments before a mass layoff, plant closing, or transfer of operations. This notice must include details about the layoff, including the number of employees affected and the effective date. Additionally, the act mandates severance pay of at least one week's pay per year of service for affected employees, even if the employer provides timely notice. "
