Thread regarding Verizon Communications Inc. layoffs

Can we stop already with the AI bullsh-t?

What’s really happening is offshoring and cutting headcount. Once we reach the next “lean” stage and the workload triples, we’ll all discover that no AI actually took on any of the work. At least not in the sense of replacing anyone. I’ve yet to see a model that doesn’t hallucinate or need supervision. Sure, it can speed up some tasks, but that’s it. So can we finally stop using it as an excuse?

The practical value of AI is very low right now. Ask it to do anything other than simple tasks and it fails. It will need to improve exponentially to have any short term material benefits. All these CEOs cutting their workforce expecting AI to make up the difference are going to be sorely disappointed.

All of you need to do some research and be better informed. VZ is not an AI company but just like many other campanies, it will partner with big AI players and do wonders. Just wait and see!!!

We will not continue to be a Blockbuster!!!

@ad the way verizon uses AI is trash. Instead of using it as a tool they're using it to make people buy stuff they don't want/need leading to more complaints leading to more churn. It's d-mb. If they use AI it should be used as a tool not as something that is forced on the reps like it is now.

Personal shopper is trash. I don't know a single person that loves it. It will literally just add stuff to a customer's account. I had an old man come in to upgrade his flip phone to another flip phone. Personal Shopper thought this 80 year old man would enjoy an iphone 17 pro max on ultimate with 2 perks and insurance. Yeah, I would love that too but I'm not selling this flip phone guy that. AI is a tool Verizon is trying to use it to get rid of employees. This will ruin a company.

AI will do some things but to hold it up as the answer to all our problems is way off the reality

Everything that AI does requires human oversight and input on an ongoing basis…it is not self-regulating or completely reliable

Who supports the code when the experienced folks have been let go and the only code generator is AI driven by a low experienced prompt operator. Big issues are queuing up to happen once these "cost saving" changes are in place.

Give it the right data and prompt and a small enough use case, it works wonders...

The problem is strategic deployment, bad data, and small use cases. Companies want to go big, but the models aren't ready for that in anyway yet.
