Thread regarding CDW layoffs

It feels different this time

People seem more enraged, more passionate about cuts and mistakes that are being made. More critical of leaders. Loyalty has completely evaporated. It feels different. What do you think?

The company was so bloated and needed rightsizing. I was impacted. Candidly I worked about 10 hours a week. My manager was a complete fool and spent more time gaming than he did working. My teammates didn’t even know one another. I made 370k last year with my side hustle so am I bitter? No - I just worked inside the broken system these fools created. Make IT Great Again! 🇮🇳

This is like the 6th massive layoff

I do think it is different given the continued discourse and anger the last couple of weeks and I hope it continues. Laying people off right before a holiday weekend was unconscionable and is just another indicator of the tone deafness of the id--ts in charge.

But honestly, I've felt this way since the first large layoff in 2023 (or was it 2022?). I'm only still here because it's hard to find a stable remote job elsewhere and I do like my coworkers. I nearly left in 2022 for a remote director-level position but it felt off and I declined and about a year later, that company eliminated that department so I dodged a massive bullet. So I've determined that the devil you know is better than the one you don't, at least in this job market.

I was part of this layoff and based on the numbers I got it, was 88% coworkers over 40 years old. One was months from retirement, some been there decades, several Sr. Managers. Top performers. I will be consulting with an employment attorney.

@a5 Very well put! I'm not bitter, but it's really difficult to watch so many who do not seem to know what they are doing or don't do the right thing continue to hold their jobs while those who actually do the hard work and care about others are let go. Something is not aligned with how CDW THINKs it is and how it actually is!

It’s the size and the quality of people.

Although good people were cut in previous rounds it wasn’t as many. It also wasn’t top performers. Some entire teams were supposedly wiped out.

I’ve heard two stories from those still there. Junior, middle and some senior staff lost their mentors and escalation points. Some teams were completely decapitated talent wise. The people left have no idea what they could do for job security as being good at your job didn’t seem to matter.

Many managers didn’t know they were firing people until the night before or morning of. They just dumped all the firing meetings on the front line managers and headed out for the holiday weekend. I’ve heard that because of that and who they had to let go there is a lot of apathy in management ranks right now.

This was the shot across the bow that the days of customer and coworker first have officially come to an end.

Agreed, but it’s like the fourth mass layoff in as many years, so not surprising that people are getting passionate and angry.
